OCT. 14 — Partial Squad Finishes Fourth At Manchester
Goshen takes second and third place one week before MCC Championships
North Manchester, IN — Competing with less than a full-strength squad, the Goshen College women’s cross country team posted respectable results at this weekend’s Manchester College Invite, finishing fourth out of nine teams and taking the second- and third-place individual finisher positions.

Goshen finished with 75 team points Saturday morning falling behind only to team-champion Cornerstone University (41 points), Manchester (67 points) and St. Mary’s College (72 points), all without the services of senior and All-American Petrana Petkova, who missed the meet due to a personal conflict.

“We had several runners on both our men’s and women’s teams that were missing due to fall break commitments,” said Doug Yoder, Goshen head coach. “As a result, our women’s team didn’t finish quite as high as we had hoped but preparing for the upcoming (Mid-Central Conference) Championships was our main goal.”

Sophomroe Laura Harnish looked to be in prime form for any meet, as the Leafs’ number three runner for most of this year exploded to a first-place team effort — and second-place overall — of 18:52, her season-best time. Senior Laura Herr was right behind Harnish, finishing third overall in a time of 18:57. Had Petkova been in attendance, the Leafs would have surely gone one, two, three — a feat the team already recorded at this season’s Earlham College Invitational (click here for article).

Freshman Whitney Turner came back from a less than stellar effort at last week’s Benedictine University Eagle Invitational to finish as the squad’s third runner, claiming 13th overall in a time of 20:01. Classmate Tina Peters (31st overall, 21:22) and junior Anna Mast (36th overall, 21:36) rounded off Goshen’s top five scoring, giving the team a gap time of 2:44 at the top.

“Laura Harnish and Laura Herr again ran very good races,” Yoder said. “Whitney Turner also turned in a great run and rebounded from last week’s meet.”

No Leaf moved further up the team standings than sophomore Tessa Horst, who finished sixth for the squad (and 48th overall) in a time of 22:08. Freshman Rachael Baker was the seventh Goshen athlete to cross the finish line, taking 51st in a clip of 22:17.

St. Mary’s Megan Gray won the individual title at the 89-woman event, finishing in 18:42, just 10 seconds off Harnish’s clip. For a composite list of team and individual performances, click here.

Goshen will take the week to finish preparations for the MCC Championships. That event will take place Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University. Women’s meet time is set for 11:30 a.m.
