SEPT. 3 — Team Opens 2005 With Hokum Karem Title
Leafs take top two paired positions to win unique opening to 2005 season
Goshen, IN — It might not be the most commonplace way to conduct a collegiate cross country meet, but for the Goshen College women’s cross country team, it’s a championship all the same.

The Leafs paired up to win the first annual Goshen College Hokum Karem event Saturday afternoon, defeating three Mid-Central Conference foes in the squad’s first collegiate competition of the 2005 season. Goshen garnered just 14 team points in the unique event that pairs runners in a relay-style race in one-mile increments, taking down Bethel College (18 points), Huntington University (20 points) and Grace College (26 points).

“This type of event is a great way to see what condition your athletes are in,” said Doug Yoder, Goshen head coach. “Our women’s team proved that we have four strong runners in taking first and second place by large margins. It takes depth to place high in larger invitationals. We’re well on our way to getting enough runners the experience and strength to run with the front packs.”

At the event, runners are partnered with a selected teammate and take turns running in one-mile increments while the other runner rests. When the first runner completes the first mile, she tags her partner for a second mile run. The twosome continue in this fashion until each has ran three miles, for a total six miles as a group.

Goshen was able to dominate the competition in its first two pairs, as senior Rachel Yantzi and junior Petrana Petkova cruised home first in a time of 37:47.00, over a minute and a half quicker than the next duo. Of course, that also happened to be runners wearing the Leafs’ purple and white, as junior Laura Herr and freshman Laura Harnish teamed to take the course in a combined 39:09.00 time, good for second place by nearly 40 seconds.

“Laura Herr and Laura Harnish each proved that they are coming on strong early in the season today,” Yoder said. “Rachel Yantzi also ran very well with Petrana, and our third group ran well. It was a good day for our entire team.”

Goshen’s third — and final — twosome of junior Rachel Wigginton and sophomore Anna Mast finished as the 12th fastest pair on the day, finishing the three-legged, one-mile course in a time of 43:30.00.

“Anytime you can win a team trophy at any event, it is worth noting,” Yoder said. “We’ll now go back to training hard for Defiance next week, and the Indiana Intercollegiates the week following that.”

Goshen will open its traditional meet regular season next Saturday, when the team will travel to Defiance College for the Defiance College Invitational. Women’s race start time is slated for 10 a.m.
