OCT. 1 — Petkova Claims Title; Others Post Top Times
Junior wins Goshen Invitational while Mast and Horst run personal bests
Goshen, IN — The competition may have been limited, but that didn’t stop the Goshen College women’s cross country team from posting some impressive results at this homecoming weekend’s Goshen College Invitational at Shanklin Park.

Despite the late withdrawal from the event by a pair of schools, the annual cross country meet went off without a hitch, with Mid-Central Conference rival Bethel College and Grace Bible College making appearances.

“We had a great day of weather and the course ran well,”said Doug Yoder, Goshen head coach. “It is unfortunate that two other teams pulled out at the beginning of the week. It would have made for a better overall meet.”

Still, Yoder’s team put forth some great performances. Junior All-American Petrana Petkova took the individual championship, running in a season-best time of 18:22, over a minute and 20 seconds quicker than the second-place finisher.

“The women’s race went about as expected,” Yoder said. “Petrana led the entire race with little trouble.”

Junior Laura Herr and senior Rachel Yantzi were the second and third Goshen runners to reach the finish line (fifth and sixth overall), clocking times of 20:26.0 and 20:36.0, respectively. Freshman Laura Harnish was slightly off her pace from week’s prior (21:46.0), but sophomore Annna Mast (12th, 21:50.0) and freshman Tessa Horst (14th, 23:20.0) each set personal best marks on the afternoon, pleasing Yoder.

“Laura Herr and Rachel Yantzi each ran very good races for us,” Yoder said. “Laura was in contact with the two Bethel runners in front of her until the last 800 meters. Rachel ran a very controlled, yet upbeat pace throughout the race, ending up running her best time of the season.”

Bethel was able to squeak by Goshen in the team point totals, garnering just 24 points to Goshen’s 35. Grace Bible did not have enough eligible runners to qualify for a team score.

Goshen will next compete in the Benedictine Eagle Invitational on Friday. Women’s race time is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
