Bloomington, IN — In perhaps the most exciting cross country meet
of the season and surely the largest, the Goshen College men’s cross
country team participated in the Indiana Intercollegiates Friday afternoon
on the campus of Indiana University, facing off against 28 teams from Indiana
institutions ranging from NCAA Div. 1 to the junior college ranks.
In the end, Goshen finished 22nd overall and 15th out of the
21-team “division two” small college division, with sophomore
Nick Adkins leading the pace in a time of 27:20.0, good for 62nd overall
and 32nd among the division two schools.
“The men ran a solid race today,” said Doug Yoder, Goshen head
coach. “Across
the board kilometer splits were very even and consistent. No
one fell of their pace at the end of the race, which was good to see.”
Sophomore Jake Gillette was right behind Adkins in the Leafs’ lineup,
finishing 49th/86th in a clip of 27:44.0. Freshman David Rumsey clocked
a time of 28:38.0 on the hilly course, good for a 71st-place finish among
small school runners and 120th overall.
“It was good to have the experience of running on a course of
this quality and difficulty,” Yoder said. “The times were a
little slower but that is to be expected with the nature of
the rolling I.U. course.”
Goshen’s 396 team points in the small school division outdid both
Hanover College (458 points) and Mid-Central Conference foe
Grace College (587 points), while the Leafs’ 22nd-place finish out
of the 28 total teams was just off last season’s finish (18th out
of a total 26 teams).
Anderson University won the division two team event with 51
total points, while Indiana State University took the overall championship
with 41 points. The Sycamores’ Sean Bowman won the overall individual
medalist trophy by finishing the race in a time of 25:12. Taylor University’s
Lance Vanderberg won the small college race in a time of 25:44. That clip
placed him seventh overall.
