GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen College Women's
Volleyball Coach Jewel Lehman announces the signing of the first
2008 volleyball recruit: Katelyn Yoder, a six-foot tall outside
hitter from Mason, Mich.
Yoder, a four-year varsity athlete and two-year team captain,
led the Mason High School Bulldogs to the league championship
in 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08. "Katelyn is a great fit
for Goshen College and the volleyball program here. We are
pleased to sign such a talented and versatile student-athlete
and we look for her to make an impact right away," Lehman
said. "While we experienced some success this past year,
we have to keep increasing our level of play. Katelyn's work
ethic and ability, combined with the strong core of players
we have coming back, will continue to elevate the level of
play here at Goshen."
Yoder accomplished much over the past four years in high school
as noted by a long list of awards highlighting academic achievement,
offensive and defensive play, leadership and enthusiasm. Awards
received four years in a row include the All-Academic Award,
CAAC Division 2 first team, CAAC Pre-season All-Tournament
Team and Mason Invitational All-Tournament Team. She was voted
as the Most Valuable Player three out of four years and made
the All-Region team in 2006-07 (2007-2008 team yet to be announced).
Lansing State Journal recognized her on its All-Area first
team in 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08.
Statistical highlights on offense and defense attest to Yoder's
talent and versatility. In her senior year at the net, she
boasted 342 kills, averaging more than 3.5 per game. An additional
offensive threat from the back row, Katelyn served 97 percent,
while she scored the point with an ace 70 times. As a primary
passer, Yoder achieved a 94.7 percent passing efficiency and
a 2.49 score on the 3.0 accuracy rating scale. On defense Yoder
had 30 total blocks and 325 digs, at an average of 3.2 per
game.
Yoder acknowledges that choosing a college is not easy but
Goshen was the right choice. "I chose Goshen because it
has the right combination of strong academics and a good athletic
program," Yoder said. "I am looking forward to getting
the chance to play under Coach Lehman and to be part of a strong
program that is headed in the right direction."
"We are extremely pleased to have Katelyn become a part
of our team. An Academic Honor Roll member, a gifted athlete
and a wonderful person, Katelyn is the type of individual we
go after here at Goshen," Lehman said. "Clearly,
she will be an asset across campus and her leadership abilities
will have a positive impact on this community in many ways."
