SEPT. 18 — Goshen Can't Hang With Huntington, Drops 3-0 Match

Visiting Foresters take slim 30-27 decision at outset in propelling to sweep

(Box Score) Goshen, IN — The Goshen College women’s volleyball team’s run of Roman Gingerich Center perfection came to an end Tuesday night, as the Leafs dropped a 27-30, 20-30, 24-30 Mid-Central Conference decision to Huntington University.

Goshen (6-4, 1-2) was able to hang with the Foresters early, but .128, -.056 and .190 attacking percentages kept the squad from making any kind of serious push. The loss was the squad's first at home on the young season.

“Huntington has a strong team all the way around,” said Jewel Lehman, Goshen head coach. “We played well in the first game and at various points in the second and third, but we need to serve tougher and gain confidence in our talent. We get tense and communication suffers when the game gets tight.”

Lehman’s squad made nine service errors on the evening and tallied just four aces, well off the team’s 2.9 ace-per-game clip coming into the match.

Freshman Peni Acayo was again the show stopper for the Leafs, putting up a team-high 12 kills to go along with half of the team’s service aces. Acayo attacked at a .147 rate, all while adding four digs, a solo and an assist block.

“Peni is starting to get more comfortable with our offense, and is reacting better defensively,” Lehman said. “Her potential is extremely high.”

Acayo was the only player in double-digit kills on the night, as sophomore Brittany Herschberger (seven), sophomore Gina Richard (six) and freshman Kelsey Herschberger (six) provided support. Kelsey Herschberger finished with a team-leading 11 digs, while Richard scooped eight. Sophomore Alli Hawkins notched 28 assists at the setter position.

Goshen will remain idle over the weekend and will return to the MCC scene Tuesday, when the team will travel to league foe Indiana Wesleyan University for a 7 p.m. match in Luckey Arena. Indiana Wesleyan — 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the MCC at press time — is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 National Poll.
