GOSHEN, Ind. – Already a special day – with the dedication of the new Frech Press Box Facility – Abri Houser and Peni Acayo made the day a little more special as they won two events each as the Maple Leafs hosted the 2008 Goshen College Track and Field Invitational on Saturday.

The four combined wins, along with a first-place finish by Deanna Kronk in the hammer throw, cemented Goshen's second-place overall finish with 141.5 points.

A junior from Newton, Kansas, and four-time NAIA National Championship participant, Houser cruised to victories in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdle events. Her winning time of 15.54 in the 100-meters was less than half a second off her school record, while it was a full second in front of the rest of the field. She won the 400-meter event in 1:07.77.

Fresh off breaking the school record in the triple jump a week ago at the Polar Bear Invite (click here for related article), Acayo took top honors in both the triple and the long jumps. Against a brutal wind at the Eigsti Track and Field Complex, Acayo jumped 16' 3/4" in the long jump and 33'5 1/2" in the triple jump for her victories.

Kronk continued her mastery of the hammer throw, winning the event by nearly 14 feet. Her top throw of 147-feet sets a new Eigsti Track and Field Complex record. Kronk also grabbed runner-up honors in both the discuss (123-feet, 3-inches) and the shot put (38-feet, 9 and a half-inches).

"We have some really nice depth right now in the field events," explained Head Coach Rick Clark. "Along with Houser's wins in the hurdles, it was a good showing for us today."

The depth that Clark was speaking of was evident in the three wins by Acayo and Kronk, but becomes more obvious when you add up the twelve top-5 finishes by the Maple Leafs in the throwing and jumping events.

Kelsey Herschberger finished runner-up in the high jump as she cleared 5-feet, while Acayo came in fifth with a jump of 4'10". In the long jump, Erica Emanuel backed up Acayo's winning performance with a fifth-place finish (15'3"), while Rachel Versluis also finished fifth in the pole vault (9'6").

In the throwing events, Katie Sowers and Rachel Mast finished second and fourth, respectively, in the javelin with marks of 114-feet and 97-feet, 9-inches. Cassie Greives rounded out Goshen's Top-5 performances in the field events, earning fifth in the discuss (109'9").

On the track, Rachael Baker finished runner-up in the 1500-meters (5:04.43) before taking fourth in the field of twenty in the 800-meters with a time of 2:30.38. Emanuel took fifth in the 200-meters (27.27) and Versluis replicated that feat with a time of 13.76 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Bethel ran away with the Goshen Invite with 311.5 points as they set three new track records. The Pilots 4x400 relay team set a new mark of 4:10.30, while Nichole Arnold set a discuss record of 138-feet, 4-inches, and Natalie Young broke her own record in the javelin with a throw of 116'7".

The Maple Leafs return to action as they travel to the Runner's Forum Meet in Anderson, Ind., on April 5th.
