Findlay, OH – The weather may keep them indoors for a couple more months, but the Goshen College women’s track and field team is already heating up the track. The indoor season officially kicked off for several members of the team as they competed at the University of Findlay Indoor Classic Friday night.
Coming off a historic freshman season, which included NAIA indoor (click here for related article) and outdoor (click here for related article) national titles, Tina Peters wasted little time asserting herself as a potential repeat champion. The Ohio native felt right at home, lapping the rest of the field as she cruised in with a time of 15:12.09 in the 3000 meter race walk. Her winning time was a national qualifying mark and places her at the top of the NAIA performance list at this early stage of the season.
The Maple Leafs also had a very good opening performance from junior Deanna Kronk in the weight throw. Although placing just 15th, Kronk, a North Wood High School product, propelled the 20-pound weight 47’3/4”. The mark was within nine inches of her school record performance set in 2007.
Also competing for Goshen’s partial squad was Abri Houser. After snagging 2743 points, Houser placed eleventh in the Indoor Pentathlon. The junior’s top event was a fifth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.64 seconds.
The Maple Leafs head back to the track on Saturday as they take part in the Taylor Invite in Upland, Indiana. |
