FEB 16 — Kronk and Houser Hit National Qualifying Marks

Lady Maple Leafs grab third-place finish at Indiana Wesleyan Invite

MARION, Ind. – The Goshen College women’s track and field team had another outstanding showing – particularly in the field events – as they took third place overall at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitation in Marion, Ind. on Saturday.

Finishing with 93 team points, the Maple Leafs finished behind only host Indiana Wesleyan and Lindenwood University, while finishing on top of conference foes Grace and Taylor for the second straight week.

Junior NorthWood High School product Deanna Kronk was at it again in the weight throw as she broke her week-old indoor school record.  Her throw of 51’ ¾” won the event and broke the school-record she set at the Anderson Invite last week (click here for related article) by nearly two feet.

“Kronk continues to show her mastering of the 20-pound weight throw by winning the event and besting the school record for the second consecutive meet,” explained Head Coach Rick Clark.  “Her huge toss hit the (NAIA) automatic national qualifying mark and now ranks her in the top ten among NAIA throwers nationally.” Kronk also finished second in the shot put (39’1 ¾”).

For the second consecutive week, freshman Kelsey Herschberger won the high jump clearing five-feet even.   Fellow freshman Penina Acayo had a strong all-around day, placing in the top three in a trio of events.  Acayo, a Kampala, Uganda native, placed second in the long jump (16’7 ¾”) and in the triple jump (33’5 ¼”).  She also finished close behind Herschberger with a third-place jump of 4’8” in the high jump.

Rounding out the field events for the Maple Leafs was Rachel Versluis’ third-place in the pole vault as she cleared 9’6” and Abri Houser’s fourth-place in the high jump.  Houser’s finish in the high jump meant three of the top four places in the event were stocked with Goshen talent.

On the track, Abri Houser continued her dominance in the 60-meter hurdles with a winning time of 9.36 seconds.  With the time, she again hit the NAIA national qualifying mark.

Sophomore Rachael Baker had another strong showing in the 800-meters with a second-place finish of 2:24.68.  Baker, along with Houser, Herschberger, and Versluis, also took second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:27.43.

The Maple Leafs will now take part in the Boilermaker Invite at Purdue University on Saturday, February 23rd.
