GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen College women's track and field team finished the 2008 Mid-Central Conference Championships in historic fashion – both as a team and as indivudals.

The Maple Leafs touted four individual championships, three All Mid-Central Conference selections, and a third-place overall team finish.

The Maple Leafs 92 team points put Goshen behind only Bethel College and Indiana Wesleyan and was the highest finish for the Leafs in the 15 years they have competed in the Mid-Central Conference Championships.

Goshen got 27 points on the opening day led by Peni Acayo's win in the high jump. The freshman cleared 5'2" on way to all conference honors, while narrowly missing points in the long jump as well (click here for related article).

Also on the opening day, junior Deanna Kronk flexed her muscles as she grabbed second place in the hammer throw with a mark of 151'7". With the throw, the NorthWood High School product qualified for her second-straight trip to the NAIA Outdoor National Championships in St. Louis.

The Maple Leafs used three points from Rachel Versluis in the pole vault (6th, 9'7 3/4"), two by Kelsey Herschberger in the high jump (7th, 4'10"), two by Cassie Greives in the hammer (7th, 122'5") and single points by Greives in the discus (8th, 110'6") and the 4x800 relay team (10:53.63) as they controlled fourth place going into the second day of competition.

Day two started with an unscored exhibition, but continued to show the development of the Goshen track and field team as both Tina Peters and Laura Stoesz qualified for May's nationals in the 3k racewalk (Click here for related article).

Junior Abri Houser stole the show on Saturday as she won both the 100 meters and the 400-meter hurdle events. Houser hit the automatic NAIA qualifying marks in both events, while setting five new records in the process (Click here for related article).

Saturday also saw the Maple Leaf relay teams kick it into high gear as they finished fourth in the 4x100 (50.56 seconds) and 4x400 (4:10.19). Meanwhile, Rachael Baker picked up seven points with a solid fifth-place run in the 800 meters (2:24.88) and sixth place in the 1500 (4:59.31). Rounding out the track events for Goshen was Erica Emanuel's sixth-place showing in the 200 meters (27.5 seconds).

The Maple Leafs continued to show their strength in the field events. Senior Katie Sowers led the efforts as she broke the track and Goshen College record in the javelin (Click here for related article). Sowers' throw of 129-feet, 2-inches won the event, while teammates Rachel Mast (4th, 110'5") and Kelsey Herschberger (7th, 101'1") rounded out a strong showing in the event.

Acayo followed up her win in the high jump by taking fourth in the triple jump (35'10 3/4"), while Kronk placed seventh in the shot put (36'11.5") and Greives placed in her third event as she took eighth in the shot put (36'11").

Bethel won the team title with 217 points, while Indiana Wesleyan notched 187.
