APR. 25 — Acayo Wins High Jump; Kronk Qualifies for Nationals

Freshman MCC Champ; Junior continues to improve in hammer throw

GOSHEN, Ind. – On a warm, but windy day, the Goshen College women's track and field team continued to show their improvement and depth as they opened up the Mid-Central Conference Championships at the Eigsti Track and Field Complex.

Having already had a stellar freshman year at Goshen , Peni Acayo – named MCC and NAIA Region VIII Freshman of the Year in volleyball (click here for related article) and doubled up for wins in the long and triple jumps at the Goshen Track and Field Invitational in March (click here for related article), added another honor to her resume.

The Kampala, Uganda native earned the first MCC Individual Championship of the Year for the Maple Leafs as she took top honors in the high jump. The freshman cleared 5-feet, 2-inches to grab 10 points for Goshen. She also barely missed out on honors in the long jump with a ninth-place finish.

Meanwhile, Deanna Kronk was busy disregarding 20-30 miles per hour headwinds as she took second place in the hammer throw. The junior just missed out on All American honors in the event a year ago (Click here for related article), but has taken some time to get into the swing of things this season. Despite having placed in several events, the NorthWood High School product had yet to qualify for NAIA Nationals and another shot at All America honors – Kronk did earn All American status in the indoor season in the weight throw (Click here for related article). Her mark of 151'7" on Friday hit the provisional mark for the St. Louis national meet.

Through seven events, the Maple Leafs sit in fourth place with 27 point. Bethel leads the MCC team scores with 81.

In addition to Acayo and Kronk's marks, Goshen got points from Cassie Greives in the discus (8th, 110'6") and the hammer throw (7th, 122'5"), Rachel Versluis in the pole vault (6th, 9'7 3/4"), Kelsey Herschberger in the high jump (7th, 4'10") and the 4x800 relay team (8th, 10:53.63).

In prelim action, Abri Houser looked strong as she ran to a top qualifying time of 15.5 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, while Erica Emmanuel also booked her place in Saturday's 200-meter finals.
