NORTH MANCHESTER , Ind. – No team scores were kept at Saturday's Spartan Classic and opposing team were thankful.
The Goshen College women's track and field team took top honors in eight events, an outstanding showing as they tuned up for next weekend's Mid-Central Conference Championships.
Led by junior NorthWood High graduate Deanna Kronk, the Maple Leafs made a clean sweep of the throwing events. Kronk won the hammer throw with a mark of 149-feet even, the shot put with a throw of 37'5 1/2", and launched the discuss 123-feet.
Senior Katie Sowers led a march of Leafs as she was victorious in the javelin with a mark of 111'11". Kelsey Herschberger finished second (103'9") and Rachel Mast placed third (96'8") as Goshen finished 1-2-3 in the event. Freshman Cassie Greives also had a consistent day as she took third in the hammer (126'9") and discus (112'6") and sixth in the shot put (34'7 3/4").
Perhaps the most-pleasant surprise of the day came from the relay teams. "The relay times in both the 4x100 and 4x400 were the fastest times this year, which hopefully shows that the teams are hitting their marks at the right time of the season," said Head Coach Rick Clark.
Rachel Versluis, Abri Houser, Peni Acayo, and Erica Emanuel ran the 4x100 relay in 51.3 seconds for the win, while Emanuel, Versluis, Houser, and Rachael Baker teamed up to win the 4x400 in 4:12.79.
Junior Abri Houser had another sharp victory in the 100-meter hurdles (15.37), while Baker set a new season-best in her second-place finish in the 800-meters (2:22.99). Also on the track, Laura Harnish took fourth in the 5K (20:19.34) in her first meet since returning from Study Service Term (SST).
Erica Emanuel won her first collegiate event as she took the long jump with a mark of 16'1". The freshman also finished third in the triple jump in her first competition in the event. Rachel Versluis finished runner-up in the pole vault as she cleared 9'6", while Kelsey Herschberger took third in the high jump (4'10").
