JAN. 5 — Herschberger To Compete For Leafs' Track In '07-'08

Local talent signs letter of intent with Goshen volleyball, track to start 2007

Goshen, IN — The start of the 2007 calendar year was encouraging for a pair of Goshen College athletic programs, as the women’s track and field staff announced that 2007 Fairfield High School graduate Kelsey Herschberger will attend and compete for the Leafs squad beginning next year.

Herschberger, who will compete in both track and in volleyball once at Goshen, brings a long list of accolades and honors in both sports.

A gifted leaper, Herschberger will lend talents both in the high jump and long jump while possibly serving on relay teams as well. Herschberger’s current bests are 5 feet, 3 and ¼ in the high jump and 16 feet, 3 and ½ in the long jump. She was all-conference in the high jump event as a junior and has qualified for regional competition in each of the last two years — all marks that could very well improve with her senior season of track upcoming. Herschberger enters her senior track season at Fairfield as the Falcons' Most Valuable Field Athlete in each of the last three years.

Those numbers and accolades paint a very positive picture for Goshen head track coach Rick Clark, who said he feels Herschberger could make an immediate impact on his program.

“We are very pleased in signing Kelsey Herschberger since she brings and abundant amount of talent and intelligence to our program,” Clark said. “She is a very strong field athlete and offers us a strong athlete in some event where we can definitely use her talent.”

Herschberger arrives to Goshen after leading the Fairfield volleyball team to the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Class 2A State Championship this fall, being named the IHSAA’s Mental Attitude Award winner in the process. Candidates must excel in mental attitude, athletic ability, scholarship and leadership during the four years of high school and participate as a state finalist in their respective sport to be eligible for the award.

Herschberger currently ranks in the top 10 of her senior class at Fairfield academically, and was named an Honorable Mention Academic All-State award winner this fall at the conclusion of the volleyball season.

“Kelsey is an excellent student who comes from a very supportive family,” Clark said. “We feel she will contribute in a positive way to the academic, social, spiritual and athletic arenas at GC. It certainly is exciting to have a quality person like Kelsey joining our program.”
