Anderson, IN — With the Goshen College academic
calendar throwing a major wrench in the Leafs’ plans
to take this Saturday’s Anderson University Fred
Wilt Invite by storm — only five of Goshen’s
women’s track and field athletes made the trip due
to the start of spring break — the squad did provide
a number of top five finishes and a school record to boot
at the meet.
Freshman Abri Houser lowered her school-record pace in
the 55-meter hurdles Saturday, finishing third at the meet
in a time of :08.68. That clip replaced her time of :08.72
set earlier in the season, as Houser has her name in four
different events in the Goshen College record books thus
far.
“Abri led our women on the track with a solid finish
in the 55-meter hurdles in a very strong field,” said
Rick Clark, Goshen head coach. “Her time dropped
the GC record once again, and she has a lot of promise
to get quicker. It was a good run for her in her last collegiate
meet before the NAIA national championships.”
Houser was backed by a pair of classmates – freshman
Betsy Freeman finished third in the high jump with a clearance
of 5 feet, 1 inch while freshman Deanna Kronk took home
fourth in the shot put (38 feet, 8 inches) and fifth in
the 20-pound weight throw (40 feet, 2 inches).
Freshman Rachel Versluis was the Leafs’ other top-five
finisher on the day, taking fifth place in the pole vault
in clearing a height of 9 feet. Junior Rachel Slentz (a
31 feet, 8 inch performance in the weight throw) was Goshen’s
only other competitor at the event.
With just five athletes competing, the Leafs still managed
to finish 10th out of 12 teams in the team scoring, finishing
with 22 points on the afternoon. Tiffin University captured
the team title with 107 points. For a complete look at

Goshen will next return to the training facility before
heading to the NAIA Indoor National Championships on Mar.
9 in Johnson City, Tennessee. The Leafs will take five
athletes to the championships to compete in seven events:
Junior Petrana Petkova in the 1,500-meter run, the 3,000-meter
run and the 5,000-meter run; freshman Laura Harnish in
the mile and 800-meter run; Houser in the 55-meter hurdles
and Houser, Petkova, Versluis and senior Rachel Yantzi
in the distance medley relay. For more information on the
