Marion, IN — With temperatures
hovering in the 40s for much of the afternoon, the Goshen College
track and field program officially began its 2005 outdoor season
in the aptly named Polar Bear Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan
University on Saturday. And while the Leafs only took a partial
squad to the event, several athletes turned in remarkable performances,
pleasing head coach Rick Clark in the process.
“We really came away with a number of positive results following
today’s meet,” Clark said. “Across the board
everyone competed well with many personal bests in just the first
outdoor meet of the season.”
Junior Erin Williams led the charge for the Leafs, taking second
place in the pole vault competition while tying the Goshen College
outdoor record with a leap of 9 feet, 6 inches. That mark was the
best ever for Williams in an outdoor competition, as she equaled
the program bookmark set by 2004 graduate Kelcie Glick last season.
Williams also finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles event, finishing
in a time of :17.40.
“Erin had a really strong day for us, first by tying the
Maple Leaf outdoor record in the pole vault and then coming back
to finish
fourth in the 100-meter hurdles while going into a stiff headwind.
She really performed well.”
A new generation of Glick — freshman Lindsy, younger sister
of Kelcie — also turned in a strong effort for the Leafs,
taking third in the pole vault behind Williams with a clearing
of 8 feet. She also finished second in the triple jump event, covering
a distance of 30 feet, 3 inches.
Sophomore Laura Herr rounded off the solid contributions with a
third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, finishing the event
in a time of 19:46.32. Junior Rachel Yantzi recorded a fourth-place
effort in the hammer throw with a toss of 108 feet, 10 inches,
while senior Ventisha Conolly finished sixth with a 103 feet, 9
inch performance.
“Lindsy Glick finished well in both the triple jump and the
pole vault, while Laura Herr ran to an outdoor personal best in
the
5,000,” Clark said. “It’s our hope that this
experience will help some of our younger athletes as we head to
our home meet next week.”
Goshen will next host its lone home event of the season, as Bethel
College, Huntington College, the University of St. Francis, Tri-State
University and Trinity Christian College all will visit the Eigsti
Track & Field Complex on Thursday for the Goshen Invitational.
Field events will begin at 2:30 p.m. with running events slated
to start at 3 p.m.
