JAN. 28-29 — Petkova Starts Season Off With Record
Sophomore breaks 15-year old school mark in year's first meet
Findlay, OH — With over 40 schools represented at this weekend’s University of Findlay Indoor Track Classic, the Goshen College women’s track team was well represented, with sophomore Petrana Petkova setting a new school record and hitting the NAIA automatic qualifying mark for national competition in the 5,000-meter run.

Petkova finished the event in a time of 17:53.63, good for first place overall at the meet while shattering a 15-year old program record. Petkova took over half a minute off the program’s previous-best mark, as Emily Willems’ clip of 18:30.24 set in 1990 stood until this weekend.

“Petrana had an excellent effort in this large field early season meet,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head coach. “Her performance should have her ranked in the top 10 in the country for NAIA schools, and she’s only going to get better. Going into this weekend, no one had run faster than her time on Friday.”

Petkova’s effort was the Leafs’ main highlight for the weekend, both by merit and by attrition. Goshen only brought four athletes to the non-team scored event, with senior Ventisha Connolly reaching a distance of 34 feet, 1/4 inch in the weight throw, sophomore Laura Herr finishing the 5,000-meter run in a time of 19:48.35, freshman Zorina Keyser completing the 600-meter run in a time of 1:49.44 and junior Rachel Yantzi running the 800-meter event in a time of 2:41.94.

The Leafs will officially open up the team portion of its indoor schedule next Friday, when it will host the Maple Leaf Invite. Field events begin at 5:30 p.m. with running events slated to begin at 7 p.m.
