breaks two school records at Boilermaker
Invitational |
West Lafayette, IN — Competing
in an NCAA Division I arena was obviously a good thing for Goshen
College women’s track junior Erin Williams, as on Saturday
she set a pair of school records to lead her squad to a very productive
day at the Boilermaker Invitational.
Williams broke program records in both the pole vault (9 feet,
6 inches) and the 60-meter hurdles (:10.14). Williams’ leap
in the pole vault was an entire foot better than Goshen’s
previous mark of 8 feet, 6 inches set by Kelcie Glick in 2004.
Williams’ standout performances on Saturday now gives her
at least a share of three records in the Leafs’ record books.
“Erin had a stellar day,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head
coach. “Any
time you can establish two program records in one afternoon of
work, you are extremely focused and determined. Erin displayed
both those qualities today.”
Sophomore Petrana Petkova was not far behind Williams, as the distance-runner
again broke her old record in the 3,000-meter run. Petkova’s
time of 10:18.85 was nearly 10 full seconds off her previous best
mark that she set in the Maple Leaf Invitational on Feb. 4.
Rounding off top three finishes for the Leafs were junior Rachel
Yantzi in the 800-meter run (2:29.68, second place) and junior
Tara Plank in both the 60-meter dash (:08.69, third) and the 200-meter
dash (:29.73, third.)
Goshen competed against teams from Purdue University, Indiana-Purdue
University Fort Wayne and a numerous amount of unattached participants.
