APR. 16 — Williams Breaks Record Again At Taylor Invite
Junior sets new mark in pole vault; Petkova returns with top finish in 5,000
Upland, IN — With the Mid-Central Conference Championship meet just a week ahead, the Goshen College women’s track and field team made good use of this weekend’s Taylor University Invitational as final preparation for the league event, setting a new school record in the pole vault while taking a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run.

Junior Erin Williams once again broke her program mark in the pole vault event, replacing her school record of 10 feet even with a clearance of 10 feet, 6 inches on Saturday, coming just six inches away from the NAIA National qualifying mark in the process. Williams joined men’s team member Don — also a junior, but not related — in setting school records at the Trojans’ meet, as Don broke a 30-year old Goshen record in the high jump (click here for related story).

“The interesting thing about both Don and Erin’s efforts was that they both were performing at the same time on Saturday, and the records fell within three minutes of each other,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head coach. “As has been the case all season, Erin continues to soar in the pole vault. She made a really good effort at the national qualifying mark of 11 feet.”

It was the fourth time this season that Williams had either tied or broken the Leafs’ pole vault record, an incredible feat considering that she has only competed in five official outdoor meets.

Goshen also received a boost from sophomore Petrana Petkova at the day-long invite, as the All-American distance runner returned from a mild case of strep throat to dominate the 5,000-meter run, taking the event title in a time of 18:29.28. Senior Melissa Lehman was next in line finishing third in a time of 19:16.96, while sophomore Laura Her ran to a fifth-place finish in a clip of 19:38.94. The Leafs also benefited from freshman Kelsy Glick’s performance in the triple jump, as the freshman placed sixth with a distance of 30 feet, 7 inches.

“Petrana led a steady group for us in the 5,000-meters,” Clark said. “We have been getting very solid performances from our distance runners over the last few meets. Melissa and Laura each had strong finishes today.”

As a team, Goshen finished in eighth place with 35 team. St. Joseph’s College won the event with 194 team points. For a complete list of team and individual results, click here.

Goshen will next travel to Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday for the MCC Championship meet. The two-day long event is slated to begin with both running and field events at 3 p.m. in Marion, Ind.
