GOSHEN, Ind. – Several solid performances, led by Jake Gillette's double-victory in the 3,000 and 5,000-meters, propelled the Goshen College men's track and field team to a second-place finish at the Goshen College Invite on Saturday.

The Maple Leafs 150 points put them behind only Bethel College at the seven-team invitational held at the Eigsti Track and Field Complex on the Goshen College campus.

"It was really nice to see Jake (Gillette) win both the 3K and the 5K as a senior in his final Invite at Goshen," said Head Coach Rick Clark.

Gillette's 16:09.69 time in the 5k race was nearly thirty seconds in front on the field, while his 9:29.33 in the 3k bested a pair of Bethel runners as well as teammates Max Wyse (10:13.95) and Nick Adkins (10.16.52), who finished fourth and fifth respectively. Ben Bouwman finished third in the 5k race with a time of 16:47.87.

It has taken Kyle Laker no time to adjust to the track after a long basketball season in a Maple Leaf uniform. The junior won the high jump at the Polar Bear Invite a week ago (click here for related article) and repeated the honor at the Goshen Invite. In clearing 6-feet, 6-inches, Laker won the event and tied the Goshen College outdoor record set by Don Williams in 2005.

The Maple Leafs' got a pair of outstanding efforts in the hurdles as David Horst and Jon Miller each earned runner-up honors. Horst took second in the 110-meters with a time of 17.81, while Miller was narrowly beat out in the 400-meters in 57.33 seconds, just a quarter of a second of the winning time.

Also on the track, John Tamirat came from way back to win his 800-meter heat in 2:08.85 blowing past two runners in the final 100-meters, but a very quick third-heat pushed Tamirat to seventh overall in the event.

In the pole vault, Luis Robledo and Hugo DeLuna finished three and four as Robledo cleared 12-feet, 6-inches and DeLuna bested 9-feet, 10-inches. Paul Versluis was the best of the Maple Leafs jumpers on the day as he took second in the triple jump with a mark of 39'4 1/4", while Brent Handfield took fourth (38'1").

In the throwing events, Justin Hochstetler finished in the top-5 in all four of his events, including a second-place showing in the hammer throw (149'6"). The senior took third in the discuss (131'3"), fifth in the javelin (139'4") and fifth in the shot put (42'1").

Overall five Eigsti Track and Field Complex records were broken as Bethel took the overall title with 298 points.

The Maple Leafs return to action on April 5th when they travel to the Runner's Meet Forum in Anderson, Ind.
