ANDERSON, Ind. – The Goshen College men's track and field team used thirteen top-five finishes to take third place at the Anderson University Invitational Saturday in Anderson.
Conference foe Taylor University racked up 155 points to run away with the event, but the Maple Leafs' 67 points was a solid finish in their first full-team scored event of the 2008 season.
"With the women's team finishing second and the men's team third, this was our best combined finish at an invite in a couple of years," said Head Coach Rick Clark. "Both teams displayed good strength in the field events, while we got a number of good performances on the track also."
Junior Jon Casselberry-Scott earned the Maple Leafs' lone victory by winning the pole vault with a mark of 13'. Luis Robledo grabbed a fourth-place finish in the event for Goshen clearing 12'6".
In typical fashion, brothers Justin and Jeff Hoschstetler continued to show strength in the weight throw with third and fifth-place finishes, respectively. Justin launched the weight 48'8 3/4", while Jeff finished with a mark of 42'1 1/2".
The Maple Leafs placed two in the top three in the triple jump as Brent Handfield grabbed second (38'4") and Paul Versluis jumped his way to third (38'2"). The distance medley relay team of Ben Bouwman, Jon Miller, Randy Keener, and Nick Bouwman had their second-straight top-four finish as they placed second with a time of 11:01.77. Senior Jake Gillette also managed a third-place finish in the 5000-meters (16:14.24).
"Gillette ran a very inspired race, while the distance medley relay team finished runner-up with a time less than two seconds short of the school record," added Clark.
The Maple Leafs return to action Saturday as they travel to the Indiana Wesleyan Invite in Marion. |
