APR. 5 — Balanced Maple Leafs Take Second at Anderson

Goshen scored in 15-of-19 events to finishw ith 143 points

ANDERSON, Ind. – With team-scored results like those that come in track and field, balance is often the key.  The Goshen College men’s track and field team has been showing more and more balance as the season progresses and never was it on more display as this weekend when they took second place at the Anderson Invitational.

The Maple Leafs won just three events, but took points in 15-of-19 events overall as they racked up 143 points, second to only host Anderson’s 177.   Goshen put finishers in the top six – the top six finishers are awarded team points – a total of 24 times on Saturday, including 13 times on the track and 11 in the field events.

“The hurdle events were where they flexed their muscle the most by sweeping the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and taking the first and third spots in the 110-meter high hurdles,” said Head Coach Rick Clark.  “Tyler Keller led the 400-meter hurdle sweep and displayed that he is on his way back from an injury suffered in the indoor season.”

Keller won the 400-meter event in 57.63, while teammates Jon Miller (59.41) and David Horst (1:01.34) finished second and third.  Junior Sam Boldman took his first title of the season as he won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.58 seconds, while Horst took third in 17.72 seconds.

A string of six third-place finishes on the track racked up the points for the Maple Leafs.  John Tamirat took third in the 800 meters (2:04.39), Randy Keener in the 1,500 (4:19.38), Nick Adkins in the 5k (16:39.48), and Max Wyse in the steeple chase (10:58.72).  Goshen’s 4x100 (46.36 seconds) and 4x400 (3:37.73) relay team’s also took third place, while Ben Bouwman placed fourth in both the 1,500 meters (4:20.10) and 5,000 meters (17:45.74).

In the field events, senior Luis Robledo cleared thirteen feet to take his second pole vault title of the season, while classmate Hugo DeLuna finished third with a mark of 9’6”.

Junior Kyle Laker continues to adjust to the track after a long basketball season as he cleared 6’6” for the second-consecutive week to again tie the school record in the high jump.  Laker also took fifth in the javelin with a mark of 130’9”.

Brent Handfield and Paul Versluis finished back-to-back in the long and triple jump events.  Handfield placed third in the long jump with a jump of 19’5 ¾”, while Versluis finished fourth just two inched behind his teammate.  The roles were reversed in the triple jump as Versluis took fourth with a mark of 39’2” and Handfield was less than four inches behind him.

Rounding out the scoring for the Maple Leafs was Jeff Hochstetler with a third-place effort of 141’2” in the hammer throw and Justin Hochstetler threw 130’8” in the discuss for a fourth-place finish.
