Hochstetler Sets New Mark

GOSHEN, Ind. – With 59.5 points, the Goshen College men's track and field team took fifth-place at the Mid-Central Conference Championships this weekend. It was a nearly identical finish from a year ago when the Maple Leafs took fifth with 61 points (Click here for related article).

Led by solid performances by the relay teams, in the field events, and the hurdles, Goshen was just 3.5 points behind fourth-place Huntington University.

The Maple Leafs made a big splash on day one as senior Justin Hochstetler broke the Goshen College record in the discus. His mark of 153'6" qualified the senior for his first NAIA National Championship (Click here for related article).

Hochstetler backed up his performance in the discus with a solid fifth-place finish in the hammer throw (1150'10") followed by brother Jeff (6th, 146'1"). Junior David Rumsey rounded out the throwing events for the Maple Leafs with a seventh-place showing in the javelin (144'7").

Meanwhile, Goshen picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes as Kyle Laker cleared 6'2" in the high jump and Luis Robledo bested 13-feet, 3-inches in the pole vault. Teammate Jon Casselberry-Scott finished sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 12'9".

Rounding out the field events for the Maple Leafs was Brent Handfield, who took seventh in both the long jump (20'6 1/4") and the triple jump (40'10 1/4").

On the track it was all about the relays and the hurdles for Goshen. After the 4x800 relay team placed fifth (8:31.25), the Leafs rolled off fourth-place finishes in the 4x100 (45.15) and 4x400 events (3:32.99).

Goshen placed two runners in each of the hurdle events as freshman Jon Miller took third in the 400 (56.54), followed by teammate Tyler Keller in fifth (57.38). After qualifying for Saturday's finals, Sam Boldman placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.61), while David Horst took eighth (17.55).

Also scoring for Goshen was Jake Gillette, who fought through a brutal wind for an inspired eighth-place mark of 35:22.36 in the 10K.
