MAY 4 — Limited Team Goes Three Deep At Division I Toledo

Goshen places three in non-team scored meet; partial roster makes waves

Toledo, OH — Taking just a portion of its 20-man roster to Friday’s University of Toledo Invitational, the Goshen College men’s track team provided a solid effort, placing three athletes while collecting season bests from others in varying events.

Topping the charts for the Leafs was freshman Tyler Keller, who, with his third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles became Goshen’s top finisher at the non-team scored meet. Keller finished his event in a clip of :57.50 seconds, coming just a shade off the first-place time of :54.33 set by Tiffin University’s Michael Ballistrea.

Following Keller was impressive results turned in by sophomore David Rumsey — fourth in the javelin; 151 feet, 10 inches — and classmate Brent Handfield — fifth in the triple jump; 40 feet, 5 and 1/3 inches — Goshen’s other top-five finishers on the day.

“We took about a dozen athletes to compete in the Toledo Invite on Friday evening, and those that competed had efforts that were either season-best or near-best marks,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head coach. “Tyler Keller’s mark of :57.50 was just off his season-best time, while David Rumsey continued to make a late-season improvement in the javelin with a personal-best toss.”

Though not placing, Clark had additional performances that ranked among the season’s best for the team. Rumsey tallied his best times in both the 800-meter run (2:02.80) and the 3,000-meter race (9:35.40) while Handfield raced to a career-best in the 400 hurdles (1:02.98). Sophomore Nick Adkins put forth a season-best in the 3,000 (9:37.00), while freshman Nick Bouwman just missed a season-best performance in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:29.70.

“While most of our team-scored meets are finished, we’re still looking for our athletes to finish as strong as they can,” Clark said. “We’ll be striving for constant improvement from here on out.”

Goshen will next compete in the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on May 24-26 at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California. Junior Jake Gillette will be the lone competitor for the Leafs’ men side, taking part in his second straight marathon. Goshen’s women will bring four athletes: Freshman Tina Peters in the 3,000-meter race walk, sophomore Deanna Kronk in the hammer throw, senior Petrana Petkova in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs and senior Laura Herr in the marathon. Sophomore Abri Houser qualified for competition in the 100-meter hurdles event, but will miss the ’07 national championships due to currently studying abroad.
