JAN. 27 — Medley Relay Squad Tops Accolades At Findlay

Partial team opens 2007 indoor season with near school mark in relay event

Findlay, OH — While only taking seven of a possible 20 athletes to the University of Findlay Indoor Classic Saturday afternoon, the Goshen College men’s track and field program nearly registered a new school record in the team’s first event of 2007.

Goshen’s distance medley relay team ran to a 11:06.37 clocking Saturday, finishing eighth out of a total 12 foursomes. Over 1,200 athletes competed at the day-long event, with every level of collegiate program represented.

The clip was the second-fastest for the distance medley relay event in school history, with only the 2005 group of Justin Gillette, Dominic Fultz, Nick Adkins and Jason Young running it faster. That foursome still holds the program record in a time of 11:00.10.

Leafs’ head coach Rick Clark said he was pleased with how his limited men’s group performed.

“Considering it was our first competition of the year, getting that close to a school record is always a nice way to open up,” Clark said.

Sophomore David Rumsey joined three freshmen in Saturday's effort, as first-year athletes Tyler Keller, John Tamirat and Ben Bouwman all made the most of their first collegiate event.

With those four athletes running solely in the distance medley, Goshen’s other three competitors — juniors Jake Gillette and Justin and Jeff Hochstetler — took their hand at two other events. The Hochstetlers finished 26th and 33rd in the weight throw, respectively, while Gillette took home a 33rd-place finish in the 5,000-meter run. Justin Hochstetler garnered a distance of 43 feet, 10 inches in the weight throw event, while Jeff managed a 41 foot, 8 inch toss. Gillette, meanwhile, finished his race in a time of 16:35.17. Sixty competitors took place in the weight throw event. Fifty-five athletes ran in the 5,000-meter competition.

Goshen will next compete at the Taylor University Invitational next Saturday.
