FEB. 3 — Goshen Preps For Maple Leaf Invite At Taylor Meet

Leafs gear up for lone home meet of season with MCC event on road

Upland, IN — With the Goshen College track & field program’s lone home meet just a week away, the Leafs’ men’s and women’s teams traveled to Upland, Indiana to compete at the Taylor University Invite on Saturday.

Goshen’s men’s team was again paced by the outstanding performance of its distance medley relay team, as senior Jake Gillette, sophomore David Rumsey and freshmen Tyler Keller and Ben Bouwman posted a 11:07.88 clip, good for second place overall. The squad’s time was just off its 11:06.37 clip from a week earlier, which remains as the second-fastest time in school history.

Gillette entered the Leafs’ lineup for freshman John Tamirat, who did not compete at the event. Tamirat was in the lineup for the Leafs’ 11:06.37 run last week at the University of Findlay (click here for article).

“Our distance medley relay team has started the year strong,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head coach. “We have been spending a lot of time on technique in training, and that has helped for the strong start.”

Rumsey was also a top-five finisher in Saturday’s mile run, finishing the event in a time of 4:40.38, good for second place overall.

Sophomore Brent Handfield finished third in the triple jump with a total distance of 40 feet, seven inches. He also finished seventh in the long jump with a clearance of 19 feet, 9 and ¼ inches.

Freshman Tyler Keller took home a fourth-place result in the high jump, clearing a height of 6 feet even. Junior Jon Casselberry-Scott finished sixth in the pole vault, eclipsing a mark of 12 feet, 6 inches.

Goshen will next host its lone indoor meet of the season on Friday evening, as the Maple Leaf Invitational will begin with the long jump at 5:15 p.m. Field events are slated to begin at 6 p.m. with track events slated for an approximate 7 p.m. start.
