FEB. 17 — Youthful Team Takes Part In Big-Time Meet At Purdue

Leafs claim five top five-finishes at NCAA Division I event

West Lafayette, IN — The Goshen College men’s track and field program got its chance to compete at the highest stage Saturday, traveling to West Lafayette, Indiana and participating in the Purdue University Boilermaker Invitational.

While no team scores were kept at the meet, several athletes from Goshen made a name for themselves, as the team finished with a quintuplet of top-five finishes on the day.

“Our young men’s team gained some very valuable experience competing in this meet with (NCAA) Division I and Division II teams,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head coach. “We had some solid performances that led to some very good placements, considering the size of the meet and quality of the competition.”

Freshman Tyler Keller led that charge, finishing fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 10 inches. Keller also placed fifth in the long jump and helped the 4 X 400 relay team to a fifth-place finish in a time of 3:42.91. Joining Keller in that group was senior Michael Amos, junior Nick Adkins and freshman John Tamirat.

Tamirat claimed a fourth-place effort in the long jump event, while also taking fourth in the 600-meter run in a time of 1:31.53.

“Both Tyler Keller and John Tamirat had really good performances here today,” Clark said. “Junior Justin Hochstetler was also outstanding in the weight throw, where he made it into the finals with his second-best throw of the season at 48 feet, 8 inches. We are still a young team, but we are gaining confidence with every meet we participate in.”
