Toledo, OH — A small number of athletes made the trip to Toledo
on Friday to compete in the University of Toledo Rocket Open, a non-team
scored meet comprised primarily of NCAA Division I, II and III programs.
Despite only a van full of competitors, Goshen finished with
some strong marks, taking three top-10 finishes in an ultra-competitive
meet.
“We took a partial team to this meet, and our men’s team members
had a solid day by placing high in a number of events,” said Rick
Clark, Goshen head coach. “To be able to compete at a meet of this
size and quality is a testament to both our athletes and their work ethic.”
Senior Don Williams led the way for the Leafs’ limited unit, finishing
second in the high jump with a clearance of 6 feet even. Classmate Matt
Hochstetler finished sixth overall in the hammer throw with a toss of 140
feet, 4 inches, while freshman Brent Handfield finished seventh in the
triple jump with a distance of 39 feet, 8 inches.
“Don, Matt and Brent all performed well enough to place in this
tough field,” Clark said. “Don’s runner up finish was
particularly pleasing, while Matt and Brent each put up some
comparable marks posted at the NCAA Division I and II levels.”
Goshen’s women’s unit — also severely limited in numbers — put
up tremendous results at the meet, setting three new school records while
posting a first- and second-place finish. Click here for a complete recap.
“Our women had a great day with some outstanding performances,” Clark
said.

Goshen will next travel to Mid-Central Conference institution
Indiana Wesleyan University for the annual IWU Last Chance Meet, an event
dedicated to athletes looking to qualify for national competition who have
posted near-miss numbers. That meet is slated for this Thursday afternoon.
