Findlay, OH — With over 1,200 athletes from 46 schools competing
at this weekend’s University of Findlay Classic, the Goshen College
track and field squads had more than its fair share of success at the mega
event.
Junior Jason Young led a partial men’s unit with a new school record
in the 600-meter run, finishing seventh overall in a time of 1:24.69. Young’s
clip erased a mark of 1:25.24 held by Justin Wikerd in 2002, while just
missing the NAIA national qualifying mark in the process.
“Jason produced a very gritty run in his first attempt at running
in the 600,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head coach. “He made a
risky but gutty move down the final stretch to finish seventh
overall. His time broke the indoor record and just missed the national
qualifying
mark. It was a great effort, especially since it was his first
time competing in the event.”
Senior Tolu Kayode backed Young’s performances with a seventh place
finish in the 35-pound weight throw, discarding the weight a distance of
51 feet, 11 inches — just an inch off his NAIA qualifying heave of
52 feet one week ago (click here for recap).
Sophomore Jake Gillette (16:21.64) and freshman David Rumsey
(16:29.08) posted solid clips in the 5,000-meter run, both of whom were
competing for the first time this season.
“Tolu showed a very steady consistency in his throwing of the
35-pound weight where he also finished seventh, and we had
very nice opening runs in the 5,000-meter run by members of our distance
crew,” Clark
said. “Although we only took a partial squad to this event, we had
some very pleasing early season results.”

Goshen will next compete in the Taylor University Invitational.
That meet is slated for Saturday, Feb. 4.
