Anderson, IN — While the Goshen College spring break may have limited
the Leafs’ track and field team in number this weekend it did not
limit a variety of outstanding performances for the team, as Goshen continued
its record-breaking pace at the Fred Wilt Invite at Anderson University
Saturday afternoon.
With just nine athletes making the trip it was a steady trio
that made the most waves, as senior Tolu Kayode, junior Jason Young and
senior Matt Hochstetler all produced impressive results at the 12-team
invite.
Perhaps most impressive was a new school record toss in the
35-pound weight throw by Kayode, who slung the object a distance of 56
feet, 1 inch en route to a first-place finish. That toss bettered his former
school record of 54 feet 1 inch set on Feb. 10 of this season (click here for article), giving the senior what Goshen head coach Rick Clark called “a
good shot of confidence” heading into the NAIA Indoor National Championships
in under three weeks.
“Tolu really warmed up for the national championships with a
monster throw in the 35-pound weight throw today,” Clark said. “Not
only did he win the event at the meet, but he bested his school
mark by two feet. He’s really starting to get some momentum as we
head into the national championships, which you need to compete in that
environment.”
Kayode’s toss was complemented by a third-place finish by classmate
Hochstetler, who collected a distance of 47 feet, 8 inches in his efforts.
Hochstetler also posted a career-best mark in the shot put with a distance
of 43 feet, 9 inches.
“Matt’s third-place finish in the weight throw and a personal
best in the shot put really was a positive note of depth in our throwing
crew,” Clark
said. “Matt has really worked hard, and it is paying off for him.”
Goshen’s list of NAIA National Championship qualifiers grew with
an impressive day for Young, as the speedster hit the national qualifying
mark in the 400-meter dash in a :50.56 finish, good for second at the meet.
Young also broke a Goshen College record in the 200-meter sprint, taking
third place in a time of :22.88 — bettering the Leafs’ program
mark of :23.04 set by Kurtis Baumgartner in 1999.
“Jason had an excellent showing today,” Clark said. “He
has been chasing a spot on the indoor national team the last several weeks
and it was very satisfying to see him earn it in his last indoor
outing.”
Young joins Kayode as Goshen’s men’s representative for the
NAIA National Championships. They will join senior Rachel Yantzi, junior
Petrana Petkova and freshmen Abri Houser, Laura Harnish and Rachel Versluis
on the Leafs’ women’s side (click here for related article).
Even with such a limited roster in place Saturday, Goshen finished
with enough points as the eighth-place team at the event, garnering 31.5
team points. Anderson won the team scoring with 88 points. For a complete

Goshen will next return to the training facility before heading
to the NAIA Indoor National Championships on Mar. 9 in Johnson City, Tennessee.
