West Lafayette, IN -— With injuries beginning to mount in number,
the Goshen College men’s track team put forth a gutsy effort at the
Boilermaker Indoor Invite Saturday, sending just 13 athletes to compete
in the mega-event.
With leaders Tolu Kayode (senior, weight throw) and Jason Young
(junior, sprints) unable to produce due to strains and pains, the Leafs
were left to look elsewhere for points in the non-team scored meet. Goshen
got a strong performance from senior Don Williams, who took first place
in the high jump (clearing a height of 6 feet, 2 inches) and fifth in the
60-meter high hurdles in a time of :08.90, less than three tenths of a
second off the program record.
Williams was backed by a strong showing from sophomore Jake
Gillette, who finished fourth overall in the 3,000-meter run in a time
of 9:12.68.
“Don Williams had a nice dual performance of winning the high
jump and coming back to place fifth in a fast field of the
60-meter high hurdles,” said Rick Clark, Goshen head coach. “Jake
Gillette also shined with a sharp performance in the men’s 3,000.”
Freshman Brent Handfield and senior Dan Adcock were a strong
one-two punch in the triple jump, as Handfield finished second overall
with a leap of 39 feet, 9 inches and Adcock right behind him in third,
clearing a distance of 39 feet, 5 inches. Freshman David Rumsey rounded
off Goshen’s group of top five finishes, taking fifth place in the
mile run in a time of 4:42.01.
“Although we are faced with a number of nagging injuries at
this point of the indoor season, we still saw a number of sharp
performances from our men’s teams,” Clark said. “It’s
always fun to run in a facility like Lambert Fieldhouse, and we will continue
to work hard to improve in all areas as we get closer to the
NAIA National
Championships.”
