24 — Balanced Attack Gives Leafs Second At Home
Goshen
makes the most of its own invitational, taking
12 top-three finishes |
(Men's Results) Goshen, IN — Beautiful sunshine and temperatures near 60 degrees set
the backdrop for the Goshen College track and field program’s lone
home meet of the season Thursday, as the Leafs hosted four other teams in
the Goshen Invite at the Eigsti Track and Field Complex. Behind a number
of outstanding performances, the Leafs claimed a second-place team finish
at the event, falling only to Mid-Central Conference rival Bethel College
in the total point standings.
“We were pleased with the efforts by both the men’s and women’s
teams to earn runner-up finishes in our invite,” said Rick Clark, Goshen
head coach. “We had a number of athletes turn in very good performances,
and that gave us some balance throughout the afternoon.”
Goshen received multiple points from junior Don Williams and
Jason Young, who each finished with multiple top-two performances. Williams
took first in both the 110-meter hurdles (:15.73) and the high jump (6 feet,
5 inches), with the latter setting a new Eigsti Field record by a Goshen
athlete. Willliams also finished fifth in the long jump, stretching out to
a distance of 18 feet, 8 inches. Young, meanwhile, finished first in the
400-meter run (15:47.20, also a new track record by a Goshen athlete) and
took second place in the 200-meter dash (:23.09). Young showed promise in
field events as well, finishing third in the javelin with a toss of 137 feet,
9 inches. He also anchored both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relay teams, as each
finished in second place. Young joined senior Jim Whitaker and juniors Dan
Adcock and Daniel Constantine in finishing a Eigsti Track record by a Goshen
team :44.58, while teaming up with the same group to record a 3:28.5 clip
in the 4 X 400 event.
“Don Williams and Jason Young led a balanced attack today,” Clark
said. “Williams
led a Goshen sweep in the hurdles and came back to win the high
jump, just missing a school record. Young had a busy afternoon picking up
a first in
the 400, a second in the 200 and a third in the javelin. Add
that to the second place finishes that his relay teams were able to capture,
and it’s
safe to say he had a very solid day for us.”
NAIA All-American Justin Gillette also shined at the meet, taking
a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:47.20. He was
also a member of the third-place 4 X 800 relay team that garnered a 8:39.98
time, running alongside sophomores Alex Bouwman and Dom Fultz and freshman
Jake Gillette.
“Justin, as usual, led the distance crew again with a victory
in the 5,000,” Clark said. “Our 4 X 8 team is really starting
to raise their level as well.”
Junior Matt Hochstetler led the Leafs in the field events, taking
home a third-place finish in the hammer throw (122 feet, 11 inches) and a
fifth in the discus (122 feet, 3 inches). Younger brother Justin Hochstetler
finished fifth in the hammer with a distance of 112 feet, 4 inches.
Adcock claimed a second-place finish in the triple jump, leaping
a distance of 39 feet, 3 inches. Whitaker and freshman Reuben Houser completed
the aforementioned sweep of the 110-meter hurdles event, with Whitaker finishing
second (:15.83) and Houser third (:17.21). Houser also took a third-place
result in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing that event in a time of 1:02.53.
Goshen finished in second place with 69 total points. Bethel
won the men’s event with 111 points, while Tri-State University finished
third (61 points), the University of St. Francis fourth (26 points) and Trinity
Christian College fifth (17 points). For a complete list of team and individual
