MAR. 19 — Squad Begins Outdoor Season At Polar Bear
Partial team boasts several personal records, first-place finishes
Marion, IN — With temperatures hovering in the 40s for much of the afternoon, the Goshen College track and field program officially began its 2005 outdoor season in the aptly named Polar Bear Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday. And while the Leafs only took a partial squad to the event, several athletes turned in remarkable performances, pleasing head coach Rick Clark in the process.

“We really came away with a number of positive results following today’s meet,” Clark said. “Across the board everyone competed well with many personal bests in just the first outdoor meet of the season.”

Sophomore Jason Young led the men’s squad, taking first in the 400-meter run in a time of :49.99. He also took home a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash (time of :22.92) and was a member of the 4 X 400 relay squad that finished second in a time of 3:28.65, complementing senior Jim Whitaker and juniors Daniel Constantine and Don Williams. Williams also provided a balanced effort for the Leafs, taking a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (:16.24) and a second-place result in the high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches, a personal best in outdoor competition.

“Jason Young had a very good day in the sprints and had a very strong run in the 400,” Clark said. “He then came back for a third in the 200. He anchored our 4 X 4 relay where we had solid legs from each of our runners. Don Williams also had a particularly good day in both the hurdles and the high jump.”

Junior Matt Hochstetler anchored a solid afternoon in the field events for Goshen, finishing third in the discus with an effort of 126 feet, 6 inches and fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 123 feet, 4 inches. Younger brother and freshman Justin Hochstetler was not far behind, scoring a sixth-place finish in the hammer with a 109 feet, 8 inch toss.

Whitaker took home a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles event. Freshman Jake Gillette made a strong showing in his first outdoor meet of his collegiate career, taking fourth place in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 37:02.26.

Goshen will next host its lone home event of the season, as Bethel College, Huntington College, the University of St. Francis, Tri-State University and Trinity Christian College all will visit the Eigsti Track & Field Complex on Thursday for the Goshen Invitational. Field events will begin at 2:30 p.m. with running events slated to start at 3 p.m.
