JAN. 28-29 — Kayode Starts Senior Season With A Bang
Goshen thrower sets new school record; hits auto-qualifying mark at Findlay
Findlay, OH — With over 40 schools represented at this weekend’s University of Findlay Indoor Track Classic, it was Goshen that made a name for itself, reeling off a pair of school records and qualifying one athlete for the NAIA national meet — all in just the first meet of the season for the young squad.

Senior Tolu Kayode broke the program’s five-year old record in the weight throw, hurling the device 52 feet 10 inches, a distance good enough to earn him an automatic trip to NAIA national competition later in the spring. Kayode broke Kevin Swartzendruber’s old mark of 51 feet, 4 inches set in the 2000 season, and should have him ranked in the nation’s top 10 throwers, according to Goshen head coach Rick Clark.

“Tolu had an excellent effort in this large field early season meet,” Clark said. “His performance should have him ranked in the top 10 in the country for NAIA schools, and he’s only going to get better.”

Kayode was flanked by the distance medley relay team of senior Justin Gillette, sophomores Dominic Fultz and Jason Young and freshman Nick Adkins, who set a new school record with a time of 11:06.55, good for 12th place overall at the weekend event. That foursome broke a four-year old program mark (11:45.04 set in 1999) while also competing for the first time as a group this season.

Junior Dan Adcock recorded a distance of 39 feet, 5.5 inches in the triple jump, Gillette ran the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:54.52 and junior Don Williams ran the high hurdles in a time of :08.64, rounding off other highlights from the meet. No team scores were kept at the event, as Goshen only sent 11 athletes to the meet.

The Leafs will officially open up the team portion of its indoor schedule next Friday, when it will host the Maple Leaf Invite. Field events begin at 5:30 p.m. with running events slated to begin at 7 p.m.
