Leafs
get balanced effort in lone home indoor meet
of season |
Goshen, IN — With a full team competing for the first time this season,
the Goshen College men’s track team got a solid performance against
Bethel College at the Maple Leaf Indoor Invitational Friday night at the
Roman Gingerich Center. A variety of athletes combined to give Goshen 62.5
team points to Bethel’s 52.5 effort, pleasing head coach Rick Clark
in the process.
“The men’s team had a really good balanced team effort for this
early in the season,” Clark said. “It should be interesting to
watch this team as we continue to improve.”
Clark has already had a number of athletes perform at an extremely
high level, led by senior Tolu Kayode in the weight throw. Just a week after
shattering the school record at the Findlay Indoor Classic, Kayode matched
that old mark with a sling of 51 feet, 4 inches on Friday night. Before his
toss of 52 feet, 10 inches at Findlay, the Goshen indoor record of 51 feet,
4 inches stood for five years (Kevin Swartzendruber, 2000). It took Kayode
just two weeks to break and then tie that mark this season.
Even with Kayode’s monster performances, the Leafs got reinforcements
from junior Don Williams in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches; first place)
and the 55-meter hurdles (:08.35; first place). Freshman Nick Adkins ran
the 1,500-meter event in a time of 4:21, good for a first-place finish, while
sophomore Dom Fultz raced to a top finish in the 800-meter run in a time
of 2:06.85. Junior Daniel Constantine took first place in the 200-meter dash
in a clip of :24.70, while senior All-American Justin Gillette easily won
the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:20.46.
“We’re very confident with the times and efforts we’re
putting up so far,” Clark said. “We will continue to work hard
at improving in preparation for national competition.”
Junior Dan Adcock also put forth a well-rounded effort on Friday,
finishing second in both the long jump (19 feet, 8 inches) and the triple
jump (39 feet, 1 inch). Adcock also finished second in the 200-meter dash
behind Constantine, completing the Leafs’ one-two punch in a clip of
:25.47.
Goshen will next compete in the Taylor University Invitational
on Saturday.
