12 — Program Records Fall Once Again At Taylor
Goshen
sets new school-best marks in three
events in 10-school meet |
Upland, IN — The Goshen men’s track and field team has wasted
no time in its attempts to re-write the school record books this season,
and was at it again Saturday at the Taylor University Indoor Invitational.
The Leafs set new school records in three events, while two athletes hit
the NAIA automatic qualifying mark for national competition in March, greatly
pleasing head coach Rick Clark.
“We had a very good day all around on our men’s team,” Clark
said. “All
of our relay teams ran well and we were happy to get another
individual nationals qualifier in the 35-pound weight throw. In all, it was
a very good performance
for us.”
Junior Matt Hochstetler recorded a distance of 48 feet, 10 inches
in the weight throw event, a mark good enough for NAIA Nationals qualification.
Hochstetler joins senior Tolu Kayode in national qualification, as Kayode’s
throw of 52 feet, 10 inches on Jan. 28 was also a new school record. Saturday
at Taylor, Kayode again reached the NAIA qualifying mark, slinging the apparatus
a distance of 52 feet, 1 inch, good for first place in the event.
“It will be great taking both Matt and Tolu to the NAIA National
meet in March,” Clark said. “They both have worked very hard
in the off-season to improve. They are both deserving of the
opportunity they have earned.”
Clark’s team also benefited from a trio of school records at the meet,
as junior Don Williams re-set his own record in the high jump, clearing a
height of 6 feet, 4 inches. Williams’ old record, set last season,
was 6 feet, 3 inches. His leap of 6-4 was good enough for second place on
Saturday.
“Don had a very good day, especially in the high jump, where he
set a new school record and barely missed making 6-6,” Clark said.
Both Goshen’s distance-medley relay and 4 X 800 relay teams also set
new program marks, with the distance-medley team taking over six seconds
off it’s old record set earlier this season. Senior Justin Gillette,
sophomores Dom Fultz and Jason Young and freshman Nick Adkins completed the
event in a time of 11:00.10, replacing the 11:06.55 clip the foursome set
at the Findlay Invitational on Jan. 28.
Freshman Justin Gillette joined the group in the 4 X 800 event
(replacing Young), and the team broke a five-year old record with a time
of 8:27.05. (The old mark of 8:44.70 was set in the 2000 season.) Goshen’s
record-setting performances were good for fourth place in the 4 X 800 and
sixth-place in the distance medley.
Over 400 athletes from 11 schools participated in the day-long
meet. Goshen finished in eighth place with 36 team points. For a complete

Goshen will next travel to the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday.
