Upland, IN — Competing in its final tune-up before Mid-Central Conference
Championship action next week, the Goshen College men’s track team
received a number of outstanding performances at this weekend’s Taylor
University Invitational. Leading the Leafs’ charge was junior Don
Williams, who broke a 30-year old Goshen College record in the high jump,
clearing a height of 6 feet, 6 inches. The program’s previous best
mark was set at 6 feet, 5 and 1/2 inches during the 1975 season by Kurt
Horst.
“Don had been toying with that mark throughout this outdoor
season, as his personal best was 6-5 prior to Saturday,” said Rick
Clark, Goshen head coach. “He came close to shattering the mark with
a very good attempt at 6-8. He has put in a lot of work and
is deserving of holding the new school record.”
Williams’ finish in the high jump was just part of his afternoon,
as he led the 4 X 100 relay team to a third-place finish in the 13-team
invitational in a time of :43.50. Joining Williams in that sprint were
senior Jim Whitaker, junior Daniel Constantine and sophomore Jason Young.
Constantine also placed second in the 400-meter dash in a time of :51.66,
and was a key part of the 4 X 400 relay team that finished fifth in a clip
of 3:30.65 with Whitaker, Fultz and Young.
Senior All-American Justin Gillette put forth a solid effort
in the 5,000-meter run, finishing in second place with a time of 16:03.84.
Gillette also helped pace a fifth-place performance in the 4 X 800 relay,
teaming with Fultz, sophomore Alex Bouwman and freshman brother Jake Gillette
for a time of 8:35.25.
“On the track, our men’s team was led by Gillette in the 5,000,” Clark
said. “We also had fairly good times in the 4 X 1 and 4 X 4 relay
events.”
Back on the field, Goshen was led by junior Matt Hochstetler,
who took a sixth-place reward in the discus (135 feet, 1 inch) and a seventh-place
finish in the hammer throw (132 feet, 10 inches). Hochstetler was flanked
by younger brother (and freshman) Justin Hochstetler, who finished eighth
in the discus with a sling of 117 feet, 9 inches.
Young complemented Goshen’s speedsters on the track with a seventh-place
finish in the 200-meter dash (:22.93). Junior Dan Adcock finished sixth
in the triple jump with a total distance of 38 feet, 11 inches.
As a team, Goshen finished in sixth place with 52 points out
of the 13-team field. Taylor won the event with 142 team points. For a

Goshen will next travel to Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday
