EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – With nearly 1000 student-athletes from across the United States and Canada gathering in the St. Louis area for the 2008 NAIA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships, the Goshen College men's and women's teams had sold showings.

While this year lacked any record-breaking, earth-shattering performances by the Maple Leafs, it did display some of the finest athletes to ever put on the purple and white uniforms on the largest stage.

The stories above will give a more detailed account of each of the eight Goshen College student-athletes and there performances this weekend, but here is a quick recap of the highlights.

It comes as no surprise to Maple Leaf fans that sophomore Tina Peters earned her fourth NAIA All American honor in just two seasons as she placed third in the 3K race walk. Joining her for the first time in the event was junior Laura Stoesz, who finished 15th.

Seniors Jake Gillette (marathon) and Justin Hochstetler (discus) performed admirably in their final collegiate events, while classmate Katie Sowers (javelin) decided to extend her track career while finishing her degree in 2009.

Juniors Deanna Kronk (hammer throw and shot put), Kyle Laker (high jump), and Abri Houser (100 and 400-meter hurdles) all came within range of their personal best, but could not quite reach the finals in their events.

"All of our athletes performed in their normal range," said head coach Rick Clark. "They gave everything they had and you have to respect that."

The women's team had been on a run of four straight championships – indoor and outdoor – with top 20 performances. With Peters recording the only points for Goshen, that run ended as the Maple Leafs took 38th overall.
