| Marion, IN — It was a difficult day for the Goshen College women’s tennis squad Tuesday, as the team dropped a 9-0 decision to Mid-Central Conference rival Indiana Wesleyan University.
The host Wildcats — ranked 14th in the nation following last year’s spring season — took straight sets at each singles position from Goshen (2-4, 0-4) and held on in all three doubles matches for the sweep win. The 9-0 victory was IWU’s fourth by that margin in the last five meetings with the Leafs — the other was an 8-1 decision.
“There is no question that Indiana Wesleyan has been the class of our league for quite some time,” said Sarah Yoder, Goshen head coach. “I still thought we could have played better tennis in some areas, as we could have had a chance for some points in a few areas.”
Perhaps Goshen’s best chance for a point or two was in the top tiers of its doubles flights, where IWU was able to secure 8-5 wins at both number one and number two. Seniors Diana Diaz and Laurelyn Foderaro fought hard in their loss at the top doubles flight, while freshmen Rachel Lanctot and Alyssa Dewing suffered the same fate at number two.
Diaz was the closest of any Goshen player in singles competition, dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision at number one singles to Wesleyan’s Julia Hedgebeth. Senior Janie Beck took four games from her opponent at number six singles (a 6-1, 6-3 loss), while Lanctot dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to IWU’s Brittany Raymond at number three singles.
Goshen will have nearly no time to sulk about this defeat, as the team will return to the road in less than 24 hours. The Leafs will travel to Defiance College tomorrow. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
