OCT. 12-13 — Team Completes Magical Season In Just Fashion
Leafs make history in capturing second place, advancing to team regional competition

Indianapolis, IN — For the first time in school history, the Goshen College Women’s Tennis team has qualified for team national regional competition this spring. The squad’s second place finish at this weekend’s MCC Tournament at the RCA Tennis Complex in Indianapolis secured this feat.

After finishing the regular season at 10-1, the team lost only to Indiana Wesleyan in the tournament — the lone team that defeated the Leafs this season. Freshman Sarah Yoder won her flight at number three singles after earning the number one seed in that position.

Senior Tonya Swartzendruber (the number four seed at number one singles) and junior Jennifer Springer (the number three seed at number two singles) were named to the all-conference team after the tournament. Springer advanced to the championship round in her flight before falling to Indiana Wesleyan’s Sarah Dukeman 6-1, 6-2.

The NAIA Regional competition for this region will also be held at the RCA Tennis Complex in Indianapolis May 3-4 of 2002. This is the first time that a Goshen squad has qualified for post-season advancement as a team.

Goshen drops Anderson; heads into MCC Tournament with 10-1 record

Senior Tonya Swartzendruber

Goshen, IN — If this weekend’s MCC Tournament is the final exam for the Goshen Women’s Tennis team, then the Anderson Ravens were merely a review session Tuesday night.

Goshen (10-1, 6-1) was tested but not tried against the Ravens, winning the team match by a 6-3 count. The Leafs now head to Indianapolis’ RCA Tennis Complex for the conference tournament, which begins Thursday.

“Tonya Swartzendruber played terrific, mentally tough tennis in her final match of her senior year,” said Sue Conrad, Goshen head coach. “She ended her four-year career with two solid wins tonight against very tough opponents.”

The Leafs' only loss this season came to conference rival Indiana Wesleyan. MCC Tournament matches begin at 9 a.m. Thursday.
