SEPT. 9 — Goshen Roll Continues; Drops Grace 6-3
Leafs beat MCC foe in non-league win, put together first win streak since '03
Goshen, IN — After a late back-out from an unnamed institution turned Saturday’s proposed three-team tournament into a dual match with Mid-Central Conference foe Grace College, the results suited Goshen head coach Stan King just fine.

After all, the 6-3 Goshen win began the program’s first winning streak since the 2003 season.

Goshen (2-0, 0-0) used consistent, deliberate tennis to knock out the visiting Lancers in a non-conference match, taking two of the three doubles positions to lead the way for a four out of five singles run. Coupled with last Tuesday’s 6-2 win over Indiana Tech, Saturday’s result equated to the program’s first back-to-back wins since 2003, when the Leafs knocked off then Huntington College and Bluffton College in 9-0 decisions.

Pleased with Saturday’s final result, King said his team could have played better tennis — perhaps the thoughts of a leader who’s program is on the rise.

“Taking two of the three doubles matches was a good start for our team, and taking four of six singles matches was a good way to finish it,” King said. “However, I thought our doubles teams could have played crisper, more aggressive tennis, but hopefully we’ll learn from this one.”

Again playing without sophomore Shyam Sabanathan due to injury (click here for related article), Goshen persisted at the bottom of both round Saturday, taking the final two doubles positions and the final four singles slots. Freshmen Aaron Sutter and Joel King made quick work of Grace’s number two doubles unit in an 8-4 win, while seniors JD Windhorst and Tim Yoder captured an 8-5 win at the number three doubles position.

Yoder (six singles), Windhorst (five singles) and sophomore Sheldon Good (four singles) all won in straight sets, with King capturing the most intense match of the day at number three singles in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Grace’s Matt Blevins.

“We are fairly evenly matched with Grace, so a 6-3 win was a good one for the team, though I’m sure our guys who lost their matches will be glad for another chance to play Grace in our scheduled conference match later in the season,” Stan King said. “Joel King won his number three singles match with great determination, and Sheldon Good did well at number four singles to stay focused and keep pressure on his opponent. JD Windhorst and Tim Yoder had their steady games going for them on their way to wins at number five and six singles. This week’s two matches should be good preparation for Tuesday’s conference match with Bethel College. We are hopeful Shyam Sabanathan’s arm injury will be healed so he can play in that match.”

Goshen is slated to host the Pilots of Bethel on Tuesday at the Goshen College Tennis Complex. Match time is set for a 4 p.m. start.

UPDATE: Tuesday’s match versus Bethel College was postponed to Friday, Sept. 15 due to inclement weather in the area. The match will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Goshen will next host Earlham College on Thursday. That match is also slated for a 4 p.m. start time.
