Goshen, IN — A week-long layoff didn’t do much to aide the Goshen
College men’s tennis team Saturday, as the squad dropped an 8-1 decision
to Mid-Central Conference rival Huntington University.
Goshen (1-4, 1-4) had its schedule turned upside down during
the week, as alleged matches against the University of St. Francis (Tuesday)
and Manchester College (Thursday) did not happen due to administrative errors
by those programs.
Perhaps the Leafs could have benefited from competition during
the week, for it was a long afternoon Saturday at the Goshen College Tennis
Complex. Goshen’s young squad was able to garner its lone point at
number two singles, where junior Tim Yoder teamed with freshman Shyam Sabanathan
for an 8-5 win over Huntington’s Daron Short and Dustin Ecker.
“It was good to see Shyam and Tim put together a good match at
number two doubles, but Huntington deserved to win this match
by a lopsided eight to one score because they played better tennis than we
did up and down
the lineup,” said Stan King, Goshen head coach. “I was disappointed
we didn’t do better, but I know we’re going to have days like
this. We were weak on some fundamentals today. Hopefully we can
make improvements.”
Sabanathan and sophomore Mickey Girma provided the most resistance
to Huntington in the singles department, stretching their respective matches
at number one and two singles to three sets before faltering.
“Mickey and Shyam were able to extend their matches to three sets,
but weren’t quite able to win the critical points in the third sets
to take their matches,” King said.
Goshen will not have to wait as long as it did last week to take
to the courts again, as the team will travel to MCC foe Spring Arbor University
on Tuesday. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
