Goshen, IN — It was a tough morning of tennis for the Goshen College
men’s team on Saturday, as Mid-Central Conference foe Marian College
came into the Goshen College Tennis Complex and walked out with a 9-0 win,
dealing the Leafs their third straight loss of the season.
To make matters worse, Goshen’s only true point possibility of the
day was ruined not by competition, but by injury. Freshman Shyam Sabanathan
claimed a first set 6-4 win over Marian’s Pete Trgovich at number two
singles, only to retire after falling behind 3-0 in what head coach Stan
King referred to as a “chronic” arm injury.
“We played some good tennis, but Marian is a stronger, more experienced
team,” King said. “Our closest match came at number two singles
where Shyam Sabanathan took a 6-4, 0-3 lead before having to
retire due to a chronic upper arm injury. That was a shame, because Shyam
was playing some
good tennis.”
Goshen (1-3, 1-3) struggled at all other singles slots, dropping
straight sets at all positions while finding game-winners scarce. Freshman
Matt Harms was able to collect a total five games won in his 6-3, 6-2 defeat
at number six singles, the most wins of any Leaf player aside from Sabanathan.
Sophomore Mickey Girma and freshman Sheldon Good did earn King’s praise
in the number one doubles position, however, as the tandem took Marian to
an 8-4 count before falling.
“Mickey and Sheldon played some pretty good tennis in their doubles
match,” King said. :We went down by an 8-4 score, but the match was
closely contested, with almost every game going to deuce. I’m am also
pleased with the way our guys continue to give it their all when
matched against superior players. Hopefully, the experience is making us
better players.”
Goshen will not have to wait long to find out. The team will
travel to MCC foe University of St. Francis on Tuesday afternoon. Match time
is set for 3:30 p.m.
