18 Good Reports As Key Newcomer For Leafs
Freshman should
compete in upper half of lineup as King looks to retool for '05 |
Goshen, IN — Goshen College men’s tennis head coach Stan King
announced Thursday that freshman Sheldon Good reported to campus Wednesday
for pre-season training, giving the Leafs a talented newcomer in a year of
rebuilding.
Good, who finished with a career record of 46-15 as a four-year
varsity player at Christopher Dock High School (Lansdale, Penn.), arrives
to Goshen as the Leafs’ top recruit, hoping to bolster a squad that
lost three seniors from last season’s 2-7 team.
“Sheldon is a strong scholar-athlete, and I’m excited about his
joining our men’s tennis program and becoming a part of our Goshen
College student body,” King said. “He has had a very successful
tennis career at Christopher Dock High School, and I look forward to Sheldon
bringing
his tennis skills, knowledge and passion for the game, as well
as leadership skills, to our men’s tennis team.”
Helping to lead more experienced teammates should come naturally
for Good, who was a four-year captain while in high school. His
outstanding play
at number two singles in both his freshman and senior seasons
and at number three singles as a sophomore and junior helped
him earn Bicentennial Athletic
League honors in each of his four prep seasons, helping to lead
his team to an overall record of 50-16 during that time span.
Good was also a District
I doubles finalist in his senior season, complementing his quarterfinalist
feat as a freshman.
“Sheldon comes to us with a solid foundation on which to build
a very successful academic and athletic career while a student
at Goshen College,” King said. “He has the tools to be a very
good player for us at this level.”
In addition to his on-court accolades, Good is also a standout
student, participating in National Honor Society throughout high school while
receiving several academic awards through Christopher Dock in his senior
year. Good said he plans on studying business information systems and communications
once classes begin next Wednesday.
“I am very excited to finally move to the next level in my tennis
career,” Good said. “I have looked forward to this step ever
since I dedicated myself to the sport in fifth grade. I am anxious
to see what the competition will be like, and I am ready to be challenged.
I feel
I have been prepared by my family and Christopher Dock to take
the next step in my life and in tennis.”
Good will not have to wait long, as Goshen will open its season
on Aug. 30 with the Goshen Invitational. Match time is slated to begin at
3 p.m.
