Fort Wayne, IN — Concluding a rough season, the Goshen
College men’s tennis team was defeated in all positions
at the Mid-Central Conference Tournament on Friday. All nine
slots were defeated by seeded players in the event, giving
Goshen a ninth-place finish in the competition and no team
points, the lowest finish for a Leafs team since 1991.
“We went into our conference tournament knowing full well
things were not
going to be easy, and they weren’t,” said Stan King, Goshen head
coach. “All our players played their hardest, and I’m proud of their
effort, but the opposition was just too good for us to have much chance at a
win. This team worked as hard as any, but it was a year when many of our conference
opponents were as strong as they have been for years. One of our veteran conference
coaches indicated that in his 25 years of coaching in the conference he had not
seen a stronger field of players throughout the conference at all positions as
there were this year.”
Goshen felt that talent early Friday, as each of its singles positions lost in
straight sets. King noted that senior Daniel Love and sophomore JD Windhorst
each played some of the best tennis of their respective seasons in losing their
singles matches. An injured Jason Yoder (freshman) competed at the number six
singles slot for the Leafs, after an ankle injury kept him out of all but one
match in the season.
“Jason Yoder played in only his second match of the season because of injury,
and it was good to see him play so well, but his game was obviously restricted
by reduced mobility,” King said.
Goshen’s best chance for a team point came at the number one singles position,
where Love and classmate Thushan Hemachandra took Marian to a three-set marathon
before losing 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1).
“Daniel and Thushan played their hearts out in a long, three-set loss to
the number
three seed from Marian College,” King said. “We came back from 0-4
and 4-5 deficits in the third set before losing in a tiebreaker. I was very proud
of the effort and class they showed in competing so hard knowing the result would
have little influence on our team finish.”
Goshen was the only team at the event not to garner a team point. Huntington
College and Spring Arbor University each collected two points in the seventh
and eighth-place finishes. The off-season now looms large for King to re-establish
the program through recruiting, as three seniors depart from a seven-man squad.
“At the start of the season, we knew we were going to be a bit short on
talent,
but we were determined to do the best we could with what we had,” King
said. “And I’m proud of the effort put forth by the team in practice
and in matches, and for the great attitude of our players in spite of the overwhelming
odds we found ourselves up against at times.”

Winona
Lake, IN — After inclement weather postponed Goshen
College’s men’s tennis match with Grace College
from Tuesday to Friday, the Leafs were hoping that a few
more days of rest and preparation could help them against
the Lancers.
Unfortunately, Grace got just as much time to rest and recover.
The Lancers used strong singles play and powerful play at number two and three
doubles to sweep Goshen (2-7, 0-7) and keep the Leafs winless in Mid-Central
Conference play heading into the MCC Tournament this weekend. Goshen got a
great effort from senior Daniel Love at number three singles, as Love was able
to win the first set before falling 6-2, 3-6, 2-6 to Grace’s Brandon
Conley. Sophomore Tim Yoder took his number four singles match to the full
three sets before falling 7-5, 1-6, 2-6. Love also teamed up with classmate
Thushan Hemachandra in a tough number one doubles loss, dropping the match
to Grace by an 8-5 score.
“Daniel Love and Tim Yoder (#4) both played some great singles, taking
their first sets, but they were unable to prevail for wins in their second and
third sets,” said Stan King, Goshen head coach. “Our doubles team
of Thushan Hemachandra and Daniel Love also played well in losing a close match.”
Goshen will now look to play the role of shock artist in this weekend’s
MCC Tournament. Play begins Thursday in Fort Wayne.

Bluffton,
OH — While injuries and youth have made it a rough
season for the Goshen College men’s tennis team, the
Leafs were able to dial in Saturday, taking a 9-0 win over
host Bluffton University that was impressive on several levels.
Goshen (2-7, 0-6) came up with come from behind wins and
complete hammerings of the host Beavers at different positions
Saturday morning, all of which made for the most remarkable
victory of the season for the Leafs.
“This was a very good win for our team and for each of our players,” said
Stan King, Goshen head coach. “We played smart, consistent tennis and had
some nice comebacks against a young Bluffton team.”
The Leafs opened doubles play in convincing fashion, as seniors Thushan Hemachandra
and Daniel Love blasted Bluffton by an 8-0 score in the number one slot. Sophomores
JD Windhorst and Tim Yoder kept things going at number two with an 8-5 win,
while senior Jeron Baker and freshman Jordan Mumaw fought back from a 1-3 deficit
to rally to an 8-4 win at number three doubles.
The Leafs then took dominating, straight set wins at each of the singles positions
except for the number two slot, where Windhorst found himself down a set and
down 1-4 in the second. Incredibly, Windhorst came back to win 11 of the next
12 games for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Bluffton’s Pete Martin.
“Our doubles play set the tone for the match, but the biggest win of the
day was JD’s at number two singles,” King said. “It was a win
JD and the team should remember for a long, long time.”
Goshen will return to the court Tuesday, when the team travels to Grace College
in returning to Mid-Central Conference competition. Match time is slated to
begin at 2:30 p.m.

Upland,
IN — With injuries making it an uphill battle from
the outset, the Goshen College men’s tennis team dropped
a 9-0 decision to Mid-Central Conference foe Taylor University
Tuesday afternoon. Out of the lineup for the Leafs were freshmen
Jordan Mumaw and Jason Yoder — ankle — and senior
Thushan Hemachandra — back — giving Goshen just
four available players to face the perennially tough Trojans.
Taylor took the number one singles position, from Hemachandra,
who had to retire due to his lower back strain and collected
an additional two points at the number six singles position
and number three doubles slot, where the Leafs were forced
to forfeit. Goshen could not collect a win at any of the
remaining spots, and Taylor had its sweep.
“Taylor has a very good, young team,” said Stan King, Goshen head
coach. “We played them tough from top to bottom, but were unable to come
away with a win at any position. (Senior) Jeron Baker stepped into the number
one doubles position for the injured Thushan Hemachandra, and he and (senior)
Daniel Love played well in extending the match to a 6-8 score. Our number two
doubles team of JD Windhorst and Tim Yoder also played a good match. We’ll
look to improve and nurse our injuries as we return to practice.”
Goshen will have until the weekend to recuperate, as the Leafs will travel
to Bluffton University on Saturday. Match time is slated to begin at 11 a.m.

Spring
Arbor keeps Leafs winless in conference play with 8-1 win

Discussion: Goshen
head coach Stan King has found the going rough early
on in the 2004 season.
|
Goshen,
IN — Just two days removed from its first win of the
season at Manchester College, the Goshen College men’s
tennis team couldn’t make it two in a row as newly
appointed Mid-Central Conference member Spring Arbor University
dispatched the Leafs by an 8-1 count Saturday morning.
Goshen (1-6, 0-5) put up a strong effort in doubles play to start the morning,
as the number two doubles team of sophomores JD Windhorst and Tim Yoder defeated
their Cougar counterpart by an 8-6 score. Seniors Thushan Hemachandra and Daniel
Love nearly pulled off a win at the number one doubles spot, falling by just
an 8-5 count. Despite the Leafs’ dropping the number three doubles match
as well, head coach Stan King said he felt confident.
“The doubles matches were close and well played, and in spite of our winning
only one of the three, I thought we had a good chance of taking this match going
into singles play,” King said. “However, that was not the case as
Spring Arbor won all six singles matches.”
The Cougars had some help, as Hemachandra suffered a lower back muscle strain
during doubles competition. Forced to retire from his set, Goshen got off to
a lackluster start: All other Leaf single players dropped matches in straight
sets except for Yoder, who battled to a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 loss at number four.
“I thought J D Windhorst competed well at number two singles against the
hard-hitting Troy Heslschwerdt, though the 6-2, 6-2 score doesn’t reflect
how good a match this was,” King said. “Tim Yoder put up a good battle
at number four, winning the second set before losing in a very close third set.”
It is uncertain how long Hemachandra will be sidelined with his back injury,
as King said he hopes Hemachandra will be back to 100 percent by Tuesday, when
the team travels to Taylor University. Match time is slated to begin at 3:30
p.m. in Upland, Indiana.

Manchester, IN — Turning in a dominant performance
against a run-down Manchester College squad, the Goshen College
men’s tennis team got its first win of the season Thursday,
taking an 8-1 decision over the host Spartans.
The Leafs (1-5, 0-4) cruised to wins in all singles matches save for the number
five slot, and took two of the three doubles sets in commanding style. The
Manchester team, hampered by the influenza virus, was forced to retire from
two singles matches, and couldn’t field a number three doubles team,
giving the Leafs an easy three points. Stil, it was Goshen that dominated the
remaining sets, as senior Thushan Hemachandra hammered Ben Felix by a 6-1,
6-1 score at number one singles and classmate Daniel Love defeated Josh Sollenberger
7-5, 6-1 at number three singles. The duo teamed up to sweep Manchester’s
number one doubles team by an 8-0 score as well, all the while pleasing Goshen
head coach Stan King.
“Getting this team win felt really good,” King said. “Hemachandra,
(sophomore) JD Windhorst, Love, and (sophomore) Tim Yoder all played well in
cruising to wins in both singles and doubles. (Senior) Jeron Baker had a nice
comeback at number five singles, recovering from down a set and 0-3 in the second
to take it 6-3 and then go on to a 4-4 deadlock in the third set before losing
6-4. I was pleased with the way we played focused and aggressive tennis, creating
and taking advantage of opportunities that came our way.”
Goshen will look to build off this momentum on Saturday, when Mid-Central Conference
newcomer Spring Arbor University visits the Goshen College Tennis Complex.
Match time is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Huntington,
IN — The Goshen College men’s tennis team was
able to capture its first two match wins of the season Tuesday,
though the team could not take the overall win, dropping
a 7-2 decision to Mid-Central Conference rival Huntington
College.
Goshen (0-5, 0-4) was paced by sophomore JD Windhorst’s win at number
two singles, as Windhorst recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over the Foresters Mitchell
McDonald. Windhorst and classmate Tim Yoder combined for the Leafs other win
at the number two doubles position, taking that frame by a 9-8 score with a
7-3 win in the tiebreaker.
“JD Windhorst played a competitive, focused match at number two singles
to take a win, but I was disappointed in our seeming lack of drive and determination
in the other singles matches,” said Stan King, Goshen head coach. “I
believe we have sufficient talent to have won some of these matches and to have
come up with some closer scores in others. Our number one and number two doubles
teams played well, with number two doubles coming from behind for the win.”
Seniors Thushan Hemachandra and Daniel Love nearly pulled off the win in the
first doubles position, driving Huntington to an 8-6 set before falling.

Indianapolis,
IN — Despite an 0-4 start to the season, the Goshen
College men’s tennis team continues to plug away and
improve — Tuesday’s 9-0 loss to Marian College
did little to change that, at least according to head coach
Stan King.
“I was pleased with our effort as a team Tuesday afternoon, and more happy
with the morale of the team even though we haven’t experienced a win in
our first four matches,” King said. “Marian has a much improved,
young team this year. Although the outcome of the match was fairly obvious as
the first singles matches were completed, I was happy with the way we competed.”
Goshen (0-4, 0-3) received strong play from sophomore Tim Yoder, who managed
to win the first set at number four singles before dropping a tough 6-7 (6-8),
6-3, 6-3 decision to Marian’s Neal Knies. Classmate JD Windhorst also
lost a tough match at the number two singles slot, falling 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 to
the Knights’ Brandon Martin.
“Tim Yoder held off some set points in the tie-breaker to win the first
set at number four singles, and J D Windhorst gave it a good run at number two
though experiencing dizziness at times during his match,” King said. “It
was good to finally get freshman Jason Yoder (a 6-0, 6-0 loss at number six singles
and a 8-2 loss with junior Jeron Baker at number three doubles) into the lineup,
though his pre-season ankle injury still has his game at less than 100 percent.
In all, we had some gutsy performances.”
Goshen will now look for its first win next week, when the team travels to
Huntington College on Wednesday. Match time is set for 3 p.m.

Marion,
IN — An unrelenting schedule has done little to help
the Goshen College men’s tennis team this fall, as
the Leafs dropped another 9-0 decision to Indiana Wesleyan
in Marion on Saturday.
The loss drops Goshen to 0-3 on the season with an 0-2 mark
in Mid-Central Conference play, while the team has yet to
record an individual or doubles
match win thus far. On Saturday, Goshen’s most competitive slot belonged
to senior Daniel Love at number three singles, who won three games against
Luke Helm of Wesleyan.
“Wesleyan has a very strong team, and the match was never in question,” said
Stan King, Goshen head coach. “However, I’m pleased with the way
our guys played hard, gave good effort, and extended points. We’ve improved
a lot as a team over the past 10 days, though this improvement has yet to be
expressed in terms of match outcome.”

Goshen,
IN — The Goshen College men’s tennis team had
a rough go of it Thursday afternoon, dropping a 9-0 decision
to Mid-Central Conference rival Bethel College. Goshen (0-2,
0-1) was defeated in straight sets at all singles positions
but did manage to compete hard at the number one (senior
Thushan Hemachandra) and number two (sophomore JD Windhorst)
singles positions.
“This was a fairly lopsided outcome, but Bethel has a strong team and is
probably one of the stronger teams in the conference this year,” said Stan
King, Goshen head coach. “However, it was good to see our guys continue
to give their all when out matched. JD Windhorst played inspired tennis in the
second set of his singles match won by Bethel’s Josh Grubbs. We are getting
better. We just have to continue to work.”
The Leafs were able to take four games in the number two doubles match with
Windhorst and sophomore Tim Yoder while the number three doubles team of senior
Jeron Baker and freshman Jordan Mumaw chalked up three games won before bowing
out.

31 Goshen Can't Find Game In Initial Match
Grace
takes non-conference meeting by 9-0 score

Goshen,
IN — Losing a 9-0 decision to Grace College to open
the season on Tuesday was unfortunate for the Goshen College
men’s tennis team, but ominous clouds began gathering
around the squad long before Tuesday’s match ever started.
First, Kalamazoo Valley Community College informed Goshen
that they could not participate — the match normally
is the annual Goshen College Invitational — meaning
Mid-Central Conference rival Grace would be the sole opponent.
Second, freshman Jason Yoder suffered a severe ankle sprain
just two days prior to the match, limiting Goshen head coach
Stan King’s roster options.
Still, the match went on, and the visiting Lancers took firm hold of a young
Goshen team. The Leafs (0-1, 0-0) dropped all singles matches in straight sets,
with only senior Thushan Hemachandra providing much of a chance — Hemachandra
led by a 4-3 score in the first set but dropped the next nine games. The Leafs
doubles teams competed hard, but could not pull out a victory despite several
close matches. Sophomores JD Windhorst and Tim Yoder lost a tough 6-4, 4-6,
7-6 (7-2) decision at number two doubles, while senior Jeron Baker and freshman
Jordan Mumaw lost an equally close 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 decision at the number
three doubles slot.
“Grace has a solid men’s team, and they outplayed us rather handily
at all six singles positions,” King said. “We played some great doubles
at all three positions, but came up on the short end, losing each match in three
sets. Though we lost the match by a 9-0 score, I was very encouraged by our doubles
play. Unfortunately, Jason Yoder’s injury hurt us.”
Goshen will have little time to prep for its next match, as the team will host
MCC rival Bethel College in a conference match Thursday. Jason Yoder is doubtful
to participate. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
