Indianapolis,
IN — Playing its best tennis of the season heading
into the Mid-Central Conference Tournament, Goshen had hopes
of sliding up a place in the conference standings after a
6-7 season yielded a fourth place finish in the league. Despite
some great tennis at several positions, the Leafs settled
for the same position in the tournament, unable to knock
Grace out of a third place stronghold.
“We went into this end-of-season tourney with hopes of improving on our
fourth place round robin finish but weren’t able to move up,” said
Stan King, Goshen head coach. “Overall, I thought our guys played some
great tennis this season, and we were playing some of our best tennis going into
the tourney.”
Goshen received singles wins from freshman JD Windhorst at number four, senior
Ben Luginbuhl at number five and junior Daniel Love at number six, but got
its greatest performance from junior Thushan Hemachandra at number three singles.
Hemachandra won two matches — the only Goshen player to do so for the
tournament — before falling to Indiana Wesleyan in the championship match
at that position. Goshen received its only other team point from its number
two doubles team of Windhorst and senior Andrew Lanctot, who defeated Grace’s
pair by a 6-4, 6-3 count.
“The tourney highlight for Goshen was the three-set win by Thushan Hemachandra
over Bethel’s Josh Pulkow in the number three singles semifinals,” King
said. “Hemachandra had good command of all his strokes and probably played
his best tennis of the season in this match. We had hopes for a few other wins,
but they didn’t materialize.”
Lanctot was named to the All-MCC team as a result of his season-long play,
despite dropping his first match of the tournament to Taylor’s Scott
Schmeissing 6-4, 6-4.
“Our 6-7 overall season record wasn’t as good as our 8-3 record of
last year, but we added three strong teams to this year’s schedule and
played three of our matches without Andrew Lanctot who could not be available
because of student teaching commitments,” King said. “Our five seniors
in Andrew Lanctot, Aaron Wieand, Ben Luginbuhl, Aaron Lehman and Andrew Kauffman
have contributed much to our tennis program during their college careers, and
they will be sorely missed for their contributions both on and off the court.”

Goshen,
IN — Returning to a form more pleasing to head coach
Stan King, the Goshen men’s tennis team swept the visiting
Bluffton College Beavers Tuesday night, giving the team its
second consecutive sweep (the Leafs defeated Huntington by
a 9-0 count Saturday) and pushing its record to 5-7 overall
with a 3-3 mark in Mid-Central Conference play.
“This was a great win for the Leafs, but closer than the 9-0 score suggests,” King
said. “There were a lot of good rallies in each match and I’m pleased
with the way our guys played at each position.”
Goshen took straight sets in each singles position, with senior Aaron Wieand
putting on the most dominating performance with his 6-1, 6-1 decision over
Bluffton’s Brad Boyles at the number two singles slot. Freshman JD Windhorst
took number three by a 6-0, 6-3 count, while senior Ben Luginbuhl used a 6-1,
6-2 effort to win the fifth singles position. Goshen also allowed just seven
total games in doubles competition to the Beavers on the afternoon.
“Our anticipation and quickness in doubles was as good as I’ve seen
this season,” King said. “Wieand, Windhorst and Luginbuhl dominated
play in their singles matches.”
Goshen will take part in an exhibition match against Goshen College alumni
at 1 p.m. Saturday. The squad returns to regular season play Tuesday when it
will host Anderson. Match time is slated for 3 p.m.

Andrew Lanctot returns a shot in warm ups prior to
his number one singles match with Huntington’s

a “dogfight.”

Goshen,
IN — A chilly Saturday morning offered the backdrop
for the Goshen men’s tennis team to return to winning,
as the Leafs dropped a 9-0 haymaker on Mid-Central Conference
rival Huntington. With the win, the Leafs end a three match
losing skid as well as a two-game MCC losing streak, pushing
the team’s conference record to 3-3 on the season.
“Our guys really wanted this win and a 9-0 win over Huntington is terrific,
even when Huntington is in a rebuilding year,” said Stan King, Goshen head
coach. “I thought we played some great tennis up and down the lineup.”
Goshen (4-7, 3-3) was able to take all singles matches in straight sets, while
the visiting Foresters could only garner a top output of three points in any
one of the doubles sets. The day’s best match came at number one singles,
where senior Andrew Lanctot took a 6-4, 7-6 (4) decision from Huntington’s
Ben Eggleston.
“Most notable on the day was Andrew’s long, two-set win over Ben
Eggleston at number one singles,” King said. “Ben’s tennis
is tough, and he has enjoyed a great college career — one that’s
included annual wins over Goshen players the past three years and before that
when he was a standout player at Jimtown High School. There were many great points
in this dogfight between two calculating players with similar games who have
known each other on the court for many years. Goshen’s patient, but alert,
aggressive play in both singles and doubles certainly paid off.”
Goshen will next take a hiatus from MCC play when the team hosts Bluffton College
(OH) Tuesday. Match time is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Goshen,
IN — Goshen found the going rough against Mid-Central
Conference leading Indiana Wesleyan University Monday night,
dropping a 9-0 decision in the process. The Leafs provided
the stiffest competition at the number four singles and number
two doubles positions, where freshman JD Windhorst lost a
close, 6-4, 7-6 (3) match in singles and then paired with
senior Andrew Lanctot in an 8-5 loss in doubles.
“Wesleyan showed us why they’ve been winning matches with little
difficulty again this year,” said Stan King, Goshen head coach. “They
have a very strong team with last year’s starting six all returning and
two freshmen breaking into this year’s top six. However, I was pleased
to see our guys stay focused and play good tennis even though we weren’t
winning many games. JD Windhorst played especially well in a close, two-set loss
at number four singles.”
Goshen (3-7, 2-3) also received a good effort from senior Aaron Wieand, who
dropped a tough 6-1, 6-4 decision to Wesleyan’s Michal Stancyk. The Leafs
will have a chance to get back to winning in the MCC on Saturday, when the
team will host Huntington. Match time is slated for 10:30 a.m.

20 Grace Takes Important Points In 6-3 Win
Leafs
play well but struggle to win necessary matches
Senior
Andrew Lanctot |
Winona
Lake, IN — It was a classic case of getting close but
not being able to finish for Goshen Saturday, as the Leafs
dropped a 6-3 decision to host Grace. Goshen was able to
win points at number one and four singles to go with a number
two doubles win, but came up short in critical matches in
other spots.
“This was a hard-fought match at almost every position,” said Stan
King, Goshen head coach. “(Senior) Andrew Lanctot won a great match at
number one singles, but unfortunately we couldn’t seem to get critical
points when we needed them in close matches that could have gone either way at
number three, five and six singles and number one and three doubles. I thought
we played some good tennis up and down the line up, though it was disappointing
to see us lose sets where we had the momentum and leads to win. Grace has a good
team and is much improved over last year.”
Lanctot led the Leafs (3-6, 2-2) with a big 6-4, 6-7 (10-8), 6-1 win over Grace’s
Jeremy Ellis at number one singles. Freshman JD Windhorst continued his strong
play with a 6-4, 6-2 straight set win at the number four singles position,
while that duo paired up to take the number two doubles spot as well.
Goshen will not have much time to collect itself for its next match. MCC leader
Indiana Wesleyan will come to Goshen Monday. Match time is slated to begin

17 IPFW Blanks Leafs In Fort Wayne
NCAA
Division I school takes care of Goshen despite solid play in several
spots
Senior
Ben Luginbuhl |
Fort Wayne,
IN — Things didn’t go particularly well for Goshen
Wednesday night, as the men’s tennis team found the
NCAA Division I level tough in a 9-0 loss to host Indiana
University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Making matters worse
was the fact that Goshen was again without its usual number
one player, senior Andrew Lanctot, who had prior academic
responsibilities.
“We were pretty much out-matched at every position,” said Stan King,
Goshen head coach. “However, I was pleased to see the good effort of our
guys throughout their matches.”
Goshen (2-5, 2-1) gave IPFW the most competition at the number one and number
four singles positions, where senior Aaron Wieand nearly took the first set
in the number one slot before dropping the match 7-5, 6-2. Senior Ben Luginbuhl
also came back to make the number four match interesting, dropping a 6-0, 7-6
(5) decision in a solid effort.
“It was good to see Aaron Wieand put together a very well-played first
set before losing it 7-5 and to have Ben Luginbuhl adjusted his game to extend
his second set into a tiebreaker after losing the first set 6-0,” King
said. “This kind of one-sided loss can be discouraging for a team, but
I believe we’ll be stronger for having played our best, and with some great
rallies, against a very strong opponent.”
Goshen will play Saturday at Grace, with a 10:30 a.m. start time. Manchester

Goshen,
IN — After dropping its last four matches, the Goshen
College men’s tennis team returned to action Saturday
with a convincing 8-1 win over Mid-Central Conference rival
Marian. The Leafs were able to take all singles positions
in straight sets save for one, and captured the top two doubles
positions for the team’s second MCC win of the young
season.
“We needed a convincing win like this one to raise our confidence level,” said
Stan King, Goshen head coach. “Our play was good, at times superb, while
moving through points against a relatively young Marian team.”
Goshen (2-4, 2-1) found little resistance from the Knights in singles play,
being led by senior Andrew Lanctot’s 7-5, 6-0 win at the number one slot.
The rest of the squad fell in the same line, with senior Ben Luginbul and junior
Daniel Love’s 8-5 loss at number three doubles being the only flaw of
the day for the Leafs.
“Lanctot got into a grove while winning his second set 6-0 in his singles
win, and (senior Aaron) Wieand played a steady, aggressive game to win handily
at singles,” King said. “It was good to see (junior Thushan) Hemachandra,
(freshman JD) Windhorst and Luginbuhl play some great tennis on their way to
one-sided wins. Love got his game clicking again with a third set tie breaker
win. I’m pleased with the way we’re improving our doubles play – doing
a better job of staying in rallies, keeping volleys low, and finishing points
at the net.”

9 Bethel Gets Best Of Goshen, 8-1
Pilots
use consistent play across board to hand Leafs first MCC loss of
year
Junior
Thushan Hemachandra |
Mishawaka,
IN — Goshen traveled to Bethel Tuesday night and dropped
its first Mid-Central Conference match of the season by an
8-1 count. Head coach Stan King said that his team didn’t
particularly play well in the loss, as the only winning Leaf
player was junior Thushan Hemachandra at number three singles
with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over Bethel’s Josh Polkow.
“Bethel is strong through most of its lineup, and we didn’t play
well enough to make this a close match,” King said. “There wasn’t
much for Goshen to cheer about, but it was great to see Hemachandra turn things
around completely in his singles match. For him to come back from a 2-6 first
set loss and then win 6-1, 6-0 was a good showing of composure.”
Goshen (1-4, 1-1) was also very close to taking slots at the number six singles
position and the number three doubles slot. In singles, junior Daniel Love
lost a heartbreaking 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 decision to the Pilots’ Brandon Shauhan,
as the match was played with a super tiebreaker in the last set as darkness
began to fall. Love also was part of the number three doubles team — along
with senior Ben Luginbuhl — that just missed garnering a point for their
squad, dropping a 9-8 (5) decision.

Bourbonnais,
IL — It was a tough day for the Goshen men’s
tennis team Saturday, as the Leafs dropped a 9-0 disappointment
to host Olivet Nazarene. Olivet took all singles matches
in straight sets, while the number two doubles team of senior
Andrew Lanctot and freshman JD Windhorst provided the most
competition in partner play, dropping an 8-4 match.
“Olivet has a very strong program,” said Stan King, Goshen head coach. “Though
set scores were not very close, I was glad to see our guys play some great points
and extend a lot of games. Playing tough against Olivet’s caliber should
help us in our upcoming matches.”
While Olivet, an NAIA Division I program, was able to take care of business
throughout the lineup, Lanctot provided a reasonable match at number one singles,
losing 6-2, 6-2. Windhorst also came on strong early in singles competition,
dropping a 6-4, 6-1 match to Olivet’s Aaron Gregory at number four singles.

4 Streak Of Invite Championships Ends
Goshen
loses to Grace and Kalamazoo Valley, ending four-year run of
own tournament title
|
First
loss of career: Goshen
head coach Stan King makes some final-minute adjustments
to the scoring post before the Goshen Invitational
on Thursday. It was the first time in King’s
tenure as coach that his squad did not win the event.
|
Goshen,
IN — For the first time in five seasons, Goshen did
not win its own Goshen Invitational. The Leafs were defeated
by both Mid-Central Conference rival Grace (7-2) and Kalamazoo
Valley Community College (7-2) Thursday afternoon, giving
fifth-year head coach Stan King his first non-championship
effort in the Leafs’ own tournament.
“We didn’t enjoy losing to both Grace and KVCC after winning this
thing for the past several years,” King said, “but both of our opponents
were stronger than those of recent years.”
Goshen was without its normal number one singles player in senior Andrew Lanctot,
as the Leafs’ ace had prior academic commitments to attend to. Against
Grace, Goshen got wins at number one and two doubles, as senior Aaron Wieand
and junior Thushan Hemachandra teamed up to take the first doubles slot with
a 6-1 win. Senior Aaron Lehman and freshman JD Windhorst won a 6-2 decision
at the number two doubles position.
Against Kalamazoo Valley, it was again Lehman who gave his team one of its
two points, winning the number six singles position with an 8-3 decision over
Valley’s David Abrams. Goshen’s other win came at the number three
doubles hole — senior Ben Luginbuhl and junior Daniel Love took the match
by a 6-2 score.
“Playing without our number one player made the competition more difficult
for everyone,” King said. “We played well in most matches, and the
competition should make us stronger for matches down the road.”
Grace won the tournament title with a 5-4 win over Kalamazoo Valley. Goshen
will not have much time to dwell on the loss. The team will travel to Olivet
Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois for an 11 a.m. match Saturday.

|
Goshen,
IN — Goshen not only opened its 2003 season with a
victory Tuesday night, but the team did it against a Mid-Central
Conference opponent. The Leafs defeated conference foe Taylor
6-3 to begin the season, greatly pleasing head coach Stan
King in the process.
“A win over Taylor is a great way to start the season,” King said. “I
thought we played some good tennis up and down the line up, and I was pleased
with how several of our guys performed in clutch situations.”
Goshen (1-0, 1-0) got key wins at the number two and three doubles positions,
as senior Andrew Lanctot and freshman JD Windhorst teamed up to take the second
position by an 8-3 count. Senior Ben Luginbuhl and junior Daniel Love were
able to clean up the third doubles spot with an 8-6 win.
Windhorst and Luginbuhl were also able to take their singles matches — number
four and five, respectively — in straight sets, as did junior Thushan
Hemachandra, who blanked Stephen Leman of Taylor, 6-0, 6-0.
“It was especially good to see our number two and three doubles teams come
through with big wins,” King said. “We needed at least one of those
wins to have the points to win the match as a team. In singles, Hemachandra did
a great job of staying on course with his 6-0 6-0 win at number three, and I
liked the way JD Windhorst took his first collegiate matches in both singles
and doubles. One and two singles were hard-fought matches, and we were able to
get one of those (senior Andrew Lanctot’s 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win at number one
singles).”
Goshen will next host it’s own invitational on Thursday, with match times
beginning at 3:30 p.m. Conference rival Grace and Kalamazoo Community College
will compete in that event.

Goshen,
IN The Goshen mens tennis program announced
Thursday that JD Windhorst has chosen to attend and play
tennis for Goshen beginning in 2003, a decision that could
not have made Goshen head coach Stan King more happy.
I'm excited about JD's decision to continue his education at Goshen College, King
said. He's the type of student-athlete we're looking for and I believe
he'll find Goshen a good place for further academic development and personal
growth.
Windhorst comes to Goshen after a stellar prep career at Indian Creek High
School (Trafalgar, Ind.), where he held the number one singles position for
all four seasons garnering an overall win-loss record of 58-15, including an
18-3 record as a senior. Windhorst also produced three singles wins beyond
his teams sectional loss in the state tournament in his senior season,
and was selected to All-District and Honorable Mention All-State status following
both his junior and senior years.
JD is a terrific young man and tennis player, someone who will be sorely
missed at Indian Creek, said Eric Ellis, Indian Creek head coach. JD
not only played superbly at the number one singles position, but in his quiet,
unassuming way he helped everyone else on the team become a better player.
Windhost plans to study computer science while at Goshen, but also has plans
to participate in the schools thriving music department. Windhorst plays
percussion and will continue to do so in productions at Goshen.
JD brings a well-developed, all-court tennis game with mental toughness
that should have immediate impact on our men's tennis program, King said. He's
been disciplined and focused in bringing his game to where it is today, and I
look forward to working with JD as he further achieves his potential as a player
and as a responsible world citizen.
