Leafs take fourth-place finish in tournament after ending regular season as second-best
in league
Junior
Andrew Lanctot |
Indianapolis,
IN After a regular season that had seen the Leafs
finish 4-2 in Mid-Central Collegiate Conference play (second
only to Indiana Wesleyan) with an overall record of 8-3,
Goshens fourth-place ending to this weekends
MCC Tournament in Indianapolis was a severe disappointment.
After taking second place (in regular season play), getting fourth place
in this tourney was a letdown, said Stan King, Goshen head coach. Up
until the tournament, this season had been a good one for us. Our guys played
a lot of good tennis on their way to a 9-3 season record. This tournament finish
doesnt tarnish our season as a whole, but we sure felt like we could have
performed better.
Goshen began the tournament on Thursday in strong fashion, winning six of its
nine matches. Friday, however, was a different story, as the Leafs werent
able to come away with any more wins. Every position was defeated by various
conference opponents Friday, as Goshen left the tournament with a meager six
team points (Wesleyan won the tournament with 24 points). And while this was
not the way King had envisioned his 2002 season ending, he feels that the foundation
for next year has been laid.
Unfortunately we anticipate losing two good players in Matt Miller and
Matt Mullet through graduation next spring, but with the return of everyone else,
we should have a good base to build next years team around.
One positive did come at the MCC Tournament for Goshen, however, as junior
Andrew Lanctot was named All-MCC by conference school coaches. Lanctot is Goshens
first All-MCC selection since Amadeo Marino in 2000.

Goshen,
IN Gearing up for the Mid-Central Collegiate Conference
tournament in Indianapolis this weekend, the Goshen mens
tennis team proved they were ready to compete by handily
defeating St. Josephs Tuesday, 8-1.
Goshen (8-3, 4-2) hammered away at the Pumas in all singles positions (save
for number one) where the Leafs took all matches in straight sets. Junior Andrew
Lanctot (number three singles) and senior Matt Miller (number five singles)
each blanked their counterparts, 6-0, 6-0.
This was a nice win for us going into the MCC end-of-season tournament
this weekend, said Stan King, Goshen head coach. I was pleased to
see our guys show the discipline to stay focused and play their games, even when
a match didn't present much of a challenge.
For Miller and junior Ben Luginbuhl, the match presented an interesting opportunity.
The duo, who normally play number three doubles, were asked to play in the
number one doubles position by their coach. With their 8-2 win at the spot,
Miller and Luginbuhl collected wins at all three doubles positions this season
while winning all but one of their 11 doubles matches on the year.
Goshen will look to continue its success in the MCC tournament this weekend.
The Leafs will be in Indy Thursday through Saturday competing in the event.

3 Leafs Take Win Over Anderson Before Darkness Falls
Miller
plays role of hero as Goshen edges by Raves 5-4 without King,
Hemachandra, Mullet
Senior
Matt Miller |
Anderson,
IN Playing on the road without its head coach, the
Goshen College mens tennis team scored a big win at
Anderson University Thursday, winning the match by a 5-4
count.
With darkness impending (Anderson does not have a lighted tennis facility)
and the match tied up at four wins apiece, it was senior Matt Miller who thrusted
himself into the role of hero for the day. Millers 10-8 tie-breaker to
decide the third set (due to darkness) at the number three singles slot won
the overall match for Goshen (7-3, 4-2). The team was without sophomore Thushan
Hemachandra (number one singles) and senior Matt Mullet (number four singles)
due to injury and a pre-determined commitment. The Leafs were also without
head coach Stan King, who also had an existing commitment that required his
presence.
Junior Aaron Wieand, playing the number one singles position for the first
time this season, captured a big 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 decision at the position to
give Goshen a shot to win the team match outright. Miller, in addition to finishing
off the match for the Leafs, also played a splendid match at number two doubles
with junior Ben Luginbuhl. The duo took an early lead in that match, only to
hold off a torrid Anderson comeback to hang on for the win.
Goshen will host St. Josephs under the lights on Tuesday. Match time
is set for 6:30 p.m.

Marion,
IN Finding a positive result for a valiant Goshen
effort was difficult to do Tuesday, as the Leafs were soundly
defeated by a very good Indiana Wesleyan team, 9-0. Wesleyan
kept its perfect season alive with the win, and handed Goshen
(6-3, 4-2) its second Mid-Central Collegiate Conference loss
of the season.
Goshen was beaten in straight sets in each singles match, with juniors Andrew
Lanctot (number three singles) and Ben Luginbuhl (number six singles) each
able to win four games in the first set of their respective matches. Both Lanctot
and Luginbuhl were blanked in their second sets, however.
We played some good tennis and I'm proud of the way our guys played, said
Stan King, Goshen head coach. But Wesleyan has a very strong team right
through the lineup and they completely dominated us today. It's not hard to see
why Wesleyan is undefeated for the season.
Goshen will have a week to recuperate from its loss to the Wildcats. The Leafs
are in action again next Tuesday, when they will host St. Josephs. Match
time is set for 6:30 p.m.

Nice

won the match, 6-2, 6-2. |
Goshen,
IN In a match that seemed closer than the final would
indicate, Goshen got a 6-3 win over a pesky Grace team that
wouldnt go away easily Saturday. The Leafs (6-2, 4-1)
found the score tied at three matches apiece after singles
play and the first doubles match was completed a loss
at number three by junior Ben Luginbuhl and senior Matt Miller,
the first of the season for the pair. Goshen got its final
two points at the number one and number two doubles spots,
however, and came away with the team win.
I hope that our superb doubles play at number one and number two translates
into greater confidence at those positions in future matches, said Stan
King, Goshen head coach. They got it done for our team today, and played
very good tennis.
Sophomore Thushan Hemachandra and junior Aaron Wieand got a huge win at the
number two doubles position, defeating their Grace counterparts 7-6 (8-6),
3-6, 6-1. The duo came back from a 1-5 deficit in the first game tiebraker
as well. Making this even more impressive was the fact that Hemachandra was
able to sustain a high level of tennis throughout the day even after his two
and a half hour slugfest at the number one singles position (a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5
loss) earlier in the morning.
Goshen travels to Indiana Wesleyan for a Mid-Central Collegiate Conference
match Tuesday. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m. Also in scheduling news, the
Sept. 19th match with Manchester (that was postponed due to rain) has been
tentatively rescheduled for this Wednesday, Sept. 25. Check back to this site

17 Goshen Dishes Out Heartache This Time
Miller
the hero as Leafs edge Huntington by 5-4 count after two straight
one-match losses
Senior
Matt Miller |
Huntington,
IN The Goshen College mens tennis team accomplished
several feats Tuesday at Mid-Cental Collegiate Conference
foe Hungtington. For one, the team finally took a 5-4 win,
after dropping its last two matches against Tri-State and
Bethel by the same score. For another, Goshen beat Huntington
for the first time since 1997, two years before current Goshen
head coach Stan King took over the reins of the program.
This was a really big win for us over a solid Huntington team, King
said following the exhilarating match. It was also big because we were
able to win the last match to finish things after being tied up at 4-4, a contrast
to our last two matches.
It was senior Matt Mullet who came away the hero for Goshen (5-2, 3-1), playing
in the final match of the evening at number four singles. Mullet won a hard-fought
match against Huntingtons Brandon Ecker, winning by the count of 4-6,
6-1, 7-6 (2). Miller also retained an undefeated individual season thus far,
joining junior Ben Luginbuhl as the only Goshen players yet to lose a singles
match.
Matt played the best all-court tennis hes played all season, and
he picked a good time to do it, King said.
Besides Mulltets late-day heroics, King said it was the two Leaf doubles
wins that keyed Goshens overall victory. Sophomore Thushan Hemachandra
and junior Aaron Wieand defeated their opponents 8-5 at the number two doubles
slot, while senior Matt Miller and junior Ben Luginbuhl took care of business
at number three, 8-4.
Goshen gets only one full day to savor this win. The Leafs are back in action
Thursday, when they host Manchester. Match time is set for 4 p.m.

14 Leafs Fall In 4-5 Heartbreaker Against Bethel

of Bethel Saturday morning. Lanctot disposed of Styles
with ease, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Lanctot
has yet to lose a match at the number four singles
position this season. |
Goshen,
IN After starting the season in blazing fashion, the
Goshen mens tennis team has now dropped two heartbreaking
decisions in a row the latest being a 4-5 loss at
the hands of Mid-Central Collegiate Conference rival Bethel
on Saturday.
Goshen (4-2, 2-1) was a perfect 4-0 on the year prior to Thursday, when the
Leafs dropped a 4-5 decision at the hands of Tri-State at home. Saturday morning
while hosting Bethel, it was nearly the same story Goshen was defeated
at the top half of its lineup in both singles and doubles.
This loss makes it two disappointing losses in a row, said Stan King,
Goshen head coach. Hopefully we can shake these off and get back on track
again.
Goshens highest seed that recorded a win was the number three doubles
team of senior Matt Miller and junior Ben Luginbuhl, which took straight sets
from their Bethel counterparts in a 6-3, 6-3 decision. Junior Andrew Lanctot
took his number four singles win over Bethels Randy Styles, with a 6-1,
6-1 knockout.

12 Goshen Drops First Match Of Season By One Match
4-5
loss to Tri-State came down to final match under the lights
Handcuffed: Sophomore
Thushan Hemachandra makes a great play as Goshen's top
singles player against Tri-State on Thursday, but it
was a tough day overall. He lost in straight sets to
Tri-State's Kevin Whitton, 7-5, 6-1. |
Goshen,
IN Goshens hopes of a perfect season were dashed
Thursday night, but ever so slightly. Tri-State nipped Goshen
by a 5-4 score that came down to the final match of the evening,
a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win for the Thunders Andy Steiner over
the Leafs Matt Mullet (senior) at the number three
singles position.
Tri-State has a good team and they played well today, said Stan King,
Goshen head coach. Matt (Mullet) couldnt quite get points when he
needed them, though he valiantly held off five match points in the process.
King could not be pleased overall with his top half of the lineup in both singles
and doubles, however. Goshen (4-1, 2-0) went winless at the top three singles
spots and two highest doubles matches. It was the second half of the order
that carried the Leafs, as junior Andrew Lanctot (number four singles), senior
Matt Miller (number five singles) and junior Ben Luginbuhl (number six singles)
all maintained perfect 5-0 individual records on the season.
Lets hope this loss helps prepare us for our next match with conference
rival, Bethel, King said.
Goshen will not have too much time to dwell on this non-conference defeat.

Indianapolis, IN Goshen
dominated play at Marian Tuesday night, taking eight of the nine matches,
with all five singles wins coming in straight sets. Junior Aaron Wieand
led the way for the Leafs (4-0, 2-0) at the number two singles position,
shutting out Jason Morris of Marian 6-0, 6-0.
It was good to see Goshen play this match aggressively and with intensity,
even though we had them outmatched at several positions, said Stan King,
Goshen head coach. Getting three points at doubles before going into the
singles was a great way to start things off.
Goshens only loss on the day came in a thrilling 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 match
at number three singles where senior Matt Mullet was defeated.
Matts match was a close, well played match of tennis, King
said. It was a good day for all of our men.

match. |
Goshen, IN Prior
to this weekend, six years had passed since the Goshen College mens
tennis team had defeated a Taylor University squad in team play. That
streak came to an abrupt halt at the Goshen College tennis complex
Saturday, where the Leafs defeated Taylor by a 6-3 count, winning five
of the six singles matches and adding one doubles match for good measure.
In the process of ending its own streak, Goshen ended one for Taylor
as well the Trojans had won 22 consecutive Mid-Central Collegiate
Conference matches before falling on Saturday.
This was a big team win for us, said Stan King, Goshen head coach. Having
not beaten them in so long made this win especially sweet.
Senior Matt Miller and juniors Aaron Wieand, Andrew Lanctot and Ben Luginbuhl
won their singles matches in straight sets, while senior Matt Mullet came back
after a 5-7 first set defeat to take the three singles spot, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Luginbuhl and Miller paired up to take the third doubles match by an 8-4 count.
Wieand put down a mini comeback by his opponent in the second set, Mullet
came from behind to win in three sets and Lanctot won nine of his last 10 games, King
said. Miller came back from a 2-5 deficit to win his second set 7-5, and
Luginbuhl mixed good control with aggressive play to win convincingly. We were
pleased with our overall play today.

5 Leafs Start Season by Winning Own Invitational
Goshen
gets 8-1 win over Hillsdale and 6-3 decision over Grace despite injury
to Hemachandra
A
day's work: Senior
Matt Mullet returns a shot during the number three singles match
against MCC rival Grace. Mullet won both matches in the three-way
invitational, defeating Drew McIntire of Grace by an 8-5 count
and Andy Dickerson of Hillsdale 8-2. |
Goshen, IN Goshen
started off the season collecting two wins while hosting the Goshen
Invitational, defeating Hillsdale in the first match of the day by
an 8-1 count, and beating Mid-Central Conference rival Grace 6-3 in
the second.
The wins were especially satisfying to Goshen head coach Stan King, who watched
his number one singles player in sophomore Thushan Hemachandra sustain an ankle
injury in the fourth game of his first match against Hillsdale. Hemachandra
was forced to withdraw from that match and was not able to play the number
one singles match against Grace, resulting in a forfeit. Hemachandra was able
to return later in the day to play in the number two doubles slot for Goshen
(2-0, 0-0), as he and junior Aaron Wieand defeated their Hillsdale counterparts
by an 8-5 decision and the Grace team by an 8-2 count.
We played some good tennis today and it was nice to come away with two
wins, King said. It was tough to see Thushan go down, but it was
good to see him come back later and play in both of his double matches. Hopefully
he will be available for our next match with Taylor University on Saturday.
Goshen was led by its three doubles teams, which won five of the six matches
they played. The Leafs were also paced by their number three through six singles
slots, as seniors Matt Mullet and Matt Miller and juniors Andrew Lanctot and
Ben Luginbuhl did not lose a singles match on the afternoon.
