OCT. 11-13 — Squad Ends Year With 5th Place Conference Finish
Goshen ties Bethel in Indianapolis-held tournament; seniors compete for last time

Senior Luke Jordan

Senior Dan Lanctot

Indianapolis, IN — Goshen took home a team fifth place conference tournament finish this weekend, tying with Bethel College. Taylor University took home the team championship in what was one of the most exciting conference championships in recent memory — eight of the nine championship matches went three sets.

The Leafs were paced by sophomore Shaurav Ojha in singles play (number six position) and all the number two and three doubles teams, made up of seniors Luke Jordan and Dan Lanctot, junior Matt Miller and freshman Thushan Hemachandra. All of these players won their first match at the event.

“This was an exciting tournament with quality play and lots of close matches,” said Stan King, Goshen head coach. “As a team we set our sights on a bit higher finish, figuring our chances were good for more wins at number two, four and six singles and at number three doubles. Nevertheless, I was pleased with the effort made by each of our players, without which we would not have fared as well as we did in this final event of the year.”

King said he would look forward to again working with the returning players next season, but would miss the squad’s two seniors in Luke Jordan and Dan Lanctot.

“Both (seniors) are smart players who maximize their abilities on the court,” King said. “Luke has played an important role in both singles and doubles during my three years coaching, and Dan’s hard work during the off season paid off in our having a strong number three doubles team this season. They will be missed.”

OCT. 8 — St. Joeseph's Not Close
The Leafs pummel St. Joe's in last regular-season match

Senior Luke Jordan

Rensselaer, IN — In what would become a clean-up win prior to the MCC Tournament, the Goshen College Maple Leafs drilled St. Joeseph’s by an 8-1 score Monday night.

All three doubles teams won by at least doubling their counterparts' score, while all winning singles players did so in straight sets. Senior Luke Jordan blanked St. Joe’s Greg Gulvas, 6-0, 6-0 at number three singles.

“I liked the way our guys stayed focused and played good tennis even when some of the match-ups were decidedly in our favor,” said Stan King, Goshen head coach. “This was a good win in preparation for the MCC tourney.”

After this rollover, the Leafs (7-5, 1-5) have a few days to prepare before heading to Indianapolis for the weekend to participate in the MCC Tournament. The tournament will be held at the RCA Tennis Complex

OCT
. 2 — Leafs Knock Out Grace. . .Again

Another close match ensues after face-off a little over a week ago

Sophomore Andrew Lanctot

Sophomore
Aaron Wieand

Goshen, IN — After a rescheduling quirk forced Goshen to play Grace twice in eight days, Goshen head coach Stan King had to be pleased that both matches went in favor of the Leafs.

The most recent, Tuesday at Goshen, was an equally tough match for Goshen (6-5, 1-5). The Leafs won by a 5-4 count — they won 6-3 at Winona Lake on Sept. 25.

The match, which was originally scheduled and thus rescheduled as a non-conference contest, found Goshen trailing 2-4 after the normally strong singles positions faltered. The Leafs then swept the Lancers at all doubles positions, just edging out the win.

“Wow, this was a great come from behind win for the Leafs,” Stan King, Goshen head coach, said. “We fell behind after some disappointing singles play, but the guys did what they had to do to win, taking all three doubles matches.”

Number two and three doubles had defeated their Grace counterparts, knotting the score at 4-4, with the number one doubles position pending. Sophomores Aaron Wieand and Andrew Lanctot came back and won after being down 1-4 in the third set. They held off three match points in that set, then took the tiebreaker 7-3.

“They (Wieand and Lanctot) put on a superb display of doubles,” King said. “This was a big win for the team, and should be a confidence builder for our number one doubles team which has struggled all season.”

Goshen, IN — According to Goshen head coach Stan King, the Leafs are improving. They just don’t have the win to show for it recently.
Goshen lost its fourth straight match to Indiana Wesleyan 3-6 Saturday, dropping it’s record to 2-4 and 0-4 in the Mid Central Conference.

“Overall I thought we played pretty well, generally maintaining our focus against a much improved Wesleyan team,” King said. “We’re steadily improving our doubles game, though there are still too many times when we lapse into non-aggressive play resulting in lost opportunities to win points.”

Sophomore Andrew Lanctot remains undefeated at number two singles, defeating his Wesleyan opponent upon retiring. The number three doubles team of senior Dan Lanctot and junior Matt Miller were also strong, defeating Wesleyan in straight sets.

SEPT. 4 — Match Goes Down To Wire At Bethel
Leafs can't pull out win in closest match of season

Sophomore Aaron Wieand

Junior Matt Miller

Freshman Thuslan
Hemachandra
Mishawaka, IN — The entire Goshen College tennis team sat and watched their teammate compete to the final set at number four singles, the last match to finish Tuesday. The team’s collective record would rest on this match.

Of course, Maple Leaf junior Matt Miller was not supposed to be in this situation. Normally playing at number five singles, Miller was bumped up to the fourth slot after freshman Thushan Hemachandra (normally number two singles) suffered a groin injury against Marian and could not play. After battling back from a 3-6 first set loss at number four singles, Miller beat Bethel’s Andrew Rodhe 6-3 in the second. The winner of the final set would determine which team would win the day.

Miller eventually lost the third set, but not without a superior effort — he lost 6-4.

“This was a very close contest,” Goshen (2-2, 0-2) head coach Stan King said. “There’s still much room for improvement in our doubles play, but we really gave a great effort today as a team.”

Sophomore Andrew Lanctot remains undefeated in singles, dominating opponents 40-4 in games played this season. Senior Luke Jordan, also bumped up a spot as a result of Hemachandra’s absence, won at number three singles.

Hemachandra began rehabilitation on his groin injury earlier this week. King said it’s hopeful he will be available against Huntington Saturday.

Goshen, IN — It wasn’t exactly the way Goshen head coach Stan King had envisioned his team’s first conference match would end. Goshen (2-1, 0-1) lost to Marian at home 6-3, while number two singles freshman Thushan Hemachandra suffered a groin injury, forcing him to retire his singles match.

“It’s a disappointment to lose this match, but Marian is a much improved team and we played them well at most positions,” King said.

Playing exceptionally good tennis for the Leafs were sophomore Andrew Lanctot, who blanked his opponent in straight sets, and sophomore Shaurav Ojha.

“It was good to see Ojha come through with some very good singles at number six, even though it was in a losing cause,” King said.

King commented that Hemachandra will most likely miss Tuesday’s match with Bethel asa a result of his injury.

“It’s always great to start off the season with a win, and we got two of them in one outing,” King said.
