(Game 1 Stats) (Game 2 Stats) Indianapolis, IN — Receiving a stellar, nearly-bionic pitching effort from sophomore Haly Williamson, the Goshen College softball team could not provide the necessary offense, dropping 1-3 and 0-1 decisions at Mid-Central Conference foe Marian College Thursday afternoon.
Goshen (4-9, 1-3) never led on the afternoon, but had multiple opportunities to capture leads, leaving a total five runners on base in what head coach Linda Bontrager called extremely disappointing defeats.
“We were in both games, but we just couldn’t get the bats to work,” Bontrager said.
Those issues quelled what otherwise was a pair of brilliant pitching performances from Williamson (1-3) who went the distance in both contests, getting the starting nod in each. The right hander struck out five Marian batters in the day’s first game and one in the second, allowing just eight hits in Game 1 and six in Game 2.
Goshen’s struggles came at the plate, where the team collected a total of just six hits altogether, with only one — a double from freshman Heather FitzSimmons in the first contest — via the extra-base variety.
“Haly pitched both games very well,” Bontrager said. “She had a good number of strikeouts in the first game with only one walk in each game. She pitched two very strong games, but we struggled to get a bat on the ball all day. We left runners on both games and were unable to string things together.”
FitzSimmons double drove in Goshen’s only run of the day in the first contest, as sophomore Amy Clem and freshman Kathyrn Schlabach each singled to compose the remainder of the Leafs’ offense in the contest. Williamson joined Clem and Schlabach in Game 2, each providing one single apiece.
Goshen will next host MCC rival Indiana Wesleyan University on Monday. The first of the scheduled double-header is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
