APR. 26 — Lack Of Offense Leads To Losses At St. Mary's
Leafs muster just five total hits in double-dip against Belles; fall 1-9 and 1-6
Notre Dame, IN — With another pair of respectable defensive and pitching games into the record books, it was again a lack of offense that led to losses for the Goshen College softball team, the most recent in 1-9 and 1-6 defeats at St. Mary’s College on Wednesday afternoon.

Goshen (2-24, 2-16) could muster just five total hits on the afternoon — leading to a total two runs — while holding the Belles to one or fewer runs in eight of a total 13 innings played on the day.

“When we can’t hit we can’t win,” said Linda Bontrager, Goshen head coach. “It really is as simple as that.”

Sophomore Tera Brackman returned to the pitcher’s circle in the first of the day’s double-header, after being sidelined for four weeks with a shoulder injury. Brackman lasted four innings against the Belles, giving up just three runs while getting no run support.

“Tera did well considering it was her first time back,” Bontrager said. “She had a good four innings of work.”

Goshen pulled within two runs in the top of the fifth inning, when sophomore Faith Borrell crossed the plate after singling. That push was short-lived, however, as the Leafs allowed the Belles six runs in the bottom of the inning, cutting the game off after five in a 1-9 defeat.

Borrell led the way at the plate, going 1-2 with a run scored. Freshman Kim Yeakey was 1-3, while senior Kris Polega finished 1-2.

In the day’s second contest, again it was a severe offensive drought that gave St. Mary’s multiple opportunities to pull away. Freshman Haly Williamson suffered the loss on the mound, striking out four and walking none. Goshen’s lone run again came in the final inning of play — this time the seventh — as Borrell again crossed the plate. Brackman and sophomore Erin Layman shared game-best batting honors, each going 1-3 from the plate.

The Leafs will return to the Goshen College Softball Complex for a final home contest on Friday, when the team will host Rochester College. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
