APR. 11 — Leafs Unable To Pick Up Win Against Cougars
Spring Arbor uses early surges to forge 9-0, 7-1 wins over Goshen
Goshen, IN — With beautiful conditions setting the backdrop for Tuesday’s Mid-Central Conference showdown with Spring Arbor University, the visiting Cougars wasted no time getting acquainted with the Goshen College Softball Complex surroundings.

A pair of five-run first innings from Spring Arbor put some clouds in the forecast for the Leafs.

Goshen (2-16, 2-10) could not withstand Spring Arbor’s early offensive pushes in either game of the day’s double-header, dropping 0-9 and 1-7 decisions in the process. Goshen limited the Cougars to just six runs in all innings but the first, including a total nine scoreless innings on the day. Still, it was not enough to snap the team’s current eight-game conference losing skid.

“We’ve got to figure out a way to get past the first inning,” said Linda Bontrager, Goshen head coach. “We can have four or five good defensive innings, but it’s not enough.”

That was certainly the case in the afternoon’s first contest, as Spring Arbor held Goshen to just one hit — sophomore Faith Borrell charted a single — as the Cougars rolled to the 9-0 win. Freshman Haly Williamson suffered the loss in the pitching circle, striking out none and walking two.

The Leafs finally unveiled their bats in the second contest, out-hitting Spring Arbor by a nine to eight margin but failing to due much with those contacts. Sophomore Erin Layman led the charge from the plate in Game Two, going 3-4 with a double. Senior Kris Polega finished 2-3, while freshman Amy Clem was 1-2 with a double and two walks. Williamson did her part offensively, finishing 2-3 from the plate. Sophomore Tera Brackman went 1-3.

Freshman Kim Yeakey was saddled with the pitching loss, throwing four innings while striking out two. Layman came on in relief, striking out three and walking two batters.

“Our bats seem sporadic,” Bontrager said. “We have struggled with putting enough hits together to score much. We are improving every day, though, and our team chemistry is strong. We will keep at it.”

Goshen will continue a brief home stand in MCC play on Thursday, when the team hosts Huntington University in double-header action. Game time for the first of two is set for 3 p.m.
